I'm thinking of getting a personalised number plate. What do you guys think about personalised plates? Are they cool, sad, ridiculous etc etc???
As my initials are ILH, it's very difficult to get a number plate with my initials which is why I'm thinking of getting ... MCS. What do you think?
Also how do I go about getting a new number plate? I've been on New Reg.com and seen lots MCS plates but I don't know if this is the best place to buy one.
I'm not a fan of 'personalised' number plates myself. They usually require too much generous interpretation to work out how they're supposed to be personal to you (for example, unless you're known by your initials, it's not really going to mean anything to most people is it?), not to mention a judicious bit of re-arranging of spaces and reshaping of numbers to look like letters.
Personally I'd never get one with my name on. Too cheesy. I'd go for a car related one. It's no different to spending money on any other mod. You can't take an aerokit on to your next car either, and a plate will hold it's value much better than any other mod too!
dvla is definitely the best place to buy. If you want an old style they have ones like E5 MCS for £599. something like N666 MCS or R70 MCS is only £250!
Your current number goes back into the DVLA 'pot' when you put your new one on, so you need do nothing with it. Usually, but not always, the original number is re-assigned if you sell the car or transfer your private plate off for any other reason.
The cheapest place for 'regular' plates is www.dvla-som.co.uk as they don't put a mark-up on like the others, but if you are after a Northern Ireland plate (mostly 3 letters and 4 numbers) or an 'ageless' plate you will need to check out one of the private firms.
Personalised number plates are exactly what they say they are, so don't worry about what other people think or whether they think they are good value or not. If you want one, get one!
That happens a lot, because 'brokers' advertise plates they don't own for a mark-up and then buy them from the DVLA once they have a buyer.
The availability of any current style or prefix style plate being advertised commercially should be checked on the DVLA website before buying as it will almost always be available cheaper!
Why not? Thats what makes it fun.... I always get car specific plates and then sell it with the car or just return it. And then get another car specific plate once i get a new car.
