There is not an insurance company in the UK that will cover a claim if your the car is not licensed to drive on the road, regardless of whether you happen to be insured or not. They are running a business, they are going to look for any excuse to not pay out, so anyone who has said they would not report untaxed cars, I really hope you are happy to accept the consequences if one of your nearest or dearest are mowed down by an untaxed driver?

i have just read all the posts and while i agree with most that its very wrong and illegal, i would not "grass" a car that looks road worthy,(I know, it does not mean it is.) but would maybe report a heap that looks like it may be dumped. Not sayin its right to drive uninsured and i would not dream of doin it now but i remember like it was yesterday, in the late 80s/early 90s, when i bought my first house, mortgage rates doubled (how i got through it and never lost the house i dont know.) g/f had a baby, then lost job, insurance rates went through the roof, no possible overtime at work, life was awful but YES, i had no tax or insurance for a year but used the car for work only, just to survive, no way i could have kept a roof over our heads without driving. This is why i would not report anyone. Sometimes life is VERY HARD TOP OFF AT LAST. (Everybody be cool, you, be cool.)

Hmmm thats quite a simple one really! If you move house tomorrow the DVLA dont know where you live so the computer loves sending letters to old house. Report them and give the DVLA the new address. I'm sure they can sort out a nice £1000 fine for not updating their address along with the fines for tax evasion. Or just hope that they get picked up by the police mobile cameras that seem to be everywhere around here at the moment. Personally I think they are a great ideal, scan 100,000 number plates a day by sat on a motorway bridge and if you're wanted by the police for anything a nice officer will turn up 30secs later behind you ![]() So there's not a massive amount that the DVLA can do really unless members of the public help them aswell.

Just coz your life was tough, it isn't an excuse for adding to someone else's pain and to potentially destroy another families life. If you had killed someone in those 12 months, your life would have been a lot tougher. Life is tough but it's not all about ourselves, it's also about the consequences of our actions. I lost £17k in the early 90's on a house but I didn't consider for a minute driving with no tax and insurance.

Yes, you are right, i was a bad boy but would do so again in those circumstances. So having a car crash and killing someone (1,000,000 / 1 shot at least, empty roads at the times i was driving) without insurance is gonna destroy a families life more than with insurance? If that had happened i would have had to pay with my possessions and liberty. Chance i took. Is that how you feel every day when you drive a car that you are potentially goin to destroy a families life? The consequences of my actions was we survived, as did everyone else. Bit of a over reaction from you in my opinion, but oh well, we all have different opinions and needs. TOP OFF AT LAST. (Everybody be cool, you, be cool.)

Hi, Sorry, but I fail to see how you can be so flippant - what you did was illegal and selfish. Tax and insurance dodging increases the costs for everyone else in the community - including those who are really stretched financially but somehow manage to scrape the cash together. The point at which the concept of a free, democratic society starts to falter is when individuals start deciding which parts of the law applies to them and which parts don't. I’m confused as to why you think you are so special that unlike the rest of us you can pick and choose? I'm not saying life wasn't tough for you back then but there are alternatives, such as public transport, a lift from a co-worker, bicycle etc. Sure they might have been inconvenient but that's life. On the other hand what if the young kid down the street had taken your car cause he couldn't afford one? That shouldn't be a problem really - maybe he simply decided the laws in relation to ownership of property didn't apply to him. My guess is you wouldn't be so blasé if that was the case or if you or a member of your family had been involved in an accident with an untaxed/uninsured driver. Cheers, Geoff.

Next we will be asked to issue speeding tickets to ourselves! I'm not condoning law breaking but if the punishment fitted the crime and people who were caught then always got prosecuted then there would be no law breakers.
