Offline | Well done....... It seems that for a decent milage it costs only £25-£30 to offset. This seems so little it makes me wonder what all the fuss is about. Perhaps they should just put a little extra tax on the fuel to invest in this. But then again, wasn't the fuel tax escalator supposed to pay for this anyway? I think that the worthy people at BP are more interested in Advertising / Marketing that reducing our carbon footprint so i think I may just not put by hand in my pocket to give to BP and rather give it to the government instead. After all I do 20,000 miles per year 32,186 KM Average 28 mpg - 10L per 100km 3,219 litres Rough cost per year at 90 pence per litre £2,897 Ouch of which V.A.T = £507 and Fuel Duty = 48.35 ppl = £1556.39 Total = £2063.40 It seems that they already has most of it so think I shall not bother. Makes you think though..... |

Offline | Me - I'm waiting for the colder winters & 3 feet of snow for 3 months of the year! Credit to anyone who signs up, but the calculation seems a bit arbitrary - just 3 choices for mileage & 3 choices for economy. Granted for the costs involved it probably won't make much difference. I would've thought I can make as big a contribution by continuing to use Tesco99 & driving as economically as possible (43mpg+ average) ?? ![]() |

| Awwww %%%% it! | Exactly - BP make billions in profit but now want their customers to pay for research for product which they will then sell to us when carbon based resources have run out The whole thing stinks right now - we suddenly have Blair & Brown preaching how we must cut carbon - after a financial report rather than a Green report on the effects of global warming. It didn't tell us anyhting new just put a cost to it .............. so increase taxes they say ......... why, what will that achieve? People need to get to work so will have to pay for petrol to do it - all it does is increase revenue to government coffers. Look at smoking, increase tax and save public health ........ what garbage, how many quit because of the tax they pay, no one I know, smoking is on the RISE right now, punitive tax does not work, merely funds wars and fat cat civil servants wages and MPs expenses The cynical head in me doesnt believe government or BP or Richard Branson or other big business are suddenly reacting due to pending environmental disaster, they are reacting as the carbon resources are running out, it will all be gone in a 30 years. They are now panicking into finding alternatives and making Joe Public pay for it again instead of re-investing their profits into more research. And when they have new products they will then continue being big business and of course Government taxing it to the hilt. |

Offline | Who gives a damn about governments and corporations and them-lot-over-whatever-ocean and your next door neighbour and the cows farting in the field over there.... We have little to no control at all on how anyone else acts![]() When it comes to issues like this, I make up my own mind about which way to go and act on it. If you think it (current thinking on climate change) is a load of tosh - or if you quite like the hot summers ![]() - forget it! If you agree with it, do something... anything... the best you can in your own little life to make things better! <.... off to make Hugo carbon neutral ![]() |

![]() 6X therapist | The simple fact is that I have done something positive about a subject I care deeply about, my life and that of everyone else depends on our actions. Doing nothing and expecting everyone else to do something is just plain wrong. BP and other corporations do make massive profits out of us, yes I agree, but they do plough a fair percentage into research and environmental projects in order that they can remain in business. This initiative seems to be a big step in the right direction in righting some of the wrongs, and they are big enough to make a difference. As for Richard Branson donating the profits of his airline to doing something, well done I say , he could have said *** it, I'll stop flying and that will reduce pollution immediatiately. BUT, all those passengers would have just used BA or some other airline anyway, so no solution there. By taking the line he has, its doing something very cool and valuable despite what the doubters are saying. What I've done today made me feel damn good , and as a result I can stick two fingers up at everyone who says "its not my problem and its someone elses responsibility"..I'm planting a few trees later in the month too ![]() |
