Pinging noise when starting engine

Hi

I've just bought a mini and this morning when starting the engine, it got a kinda of ping noise.

I started it again and it's still there.....like a warning sound for something.

I've been through the manual but can't find much, only an ice warning signal sounds but I'm not sure if its that.

I've still got 3000 miles until the Oil Service so don't think it can be anything to do with servicing.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Kim,most likely to be the ice warning with the cold weather at the moment, comes on at temps below 3 degrees.

This is not (at the time of writing) documented by MINI, but at 3° Celsius, or 37° Fahrenheit the MINI will 'beep' or 'chime' to warn of the danger of possible 'black ice' on the roads.

The temperature read out will also flash to alert you of the possible hazard.

This seems to have become a standard MINI feature around mid-March 2002 production.

Taken from the mini2 FAQ.

Mine is a feb 02 build. Doesnt do the bing

If you look at your rev counter at the same time you hear the bing then you'll see the temp gauge flashing saying its COLD!

Which is especially useful for all the people that didn't notice it was cold whilst walking to the car and then spending ten minutes defrosting the windows before getting in!

If the temp guage flashes at the same time it's the ice warning indicator if not it's something else.

Think this is the first one this year folks I wonder how many more...

It was acceptable in the 80's

Yes I had a ping too 2 degrees but nice and sunny in Huddersfield.

Wondered what it was, as the only one I've had before was when I hit a pothole Then I saw temperature flashing and realised Max was complaining about the cold

I'll trade for your English weather.... I've had constant pings this past week. It was down to -12 C for a few mornings here.
