I thought i would pick all your guys brains on behalf of my techno phobia mother who is the proud owner of a 51 plate Cooper S. She has owned the car about 12 months now, to be told by our friendly local BMW dealership that she needs a backbox, and new pads all round.
The backbox apparently will cost £315 and the pads £90, but they said they 'might' need to put on discs as well, but cant tell before the job is started. Firstly, isnt it rare for a backbox to corrode in such a short period of time, and the biggest gripe we have is that you 'apparently' cannot buy any of these parts anywhere else!!!????
The whole bill could come to around £600 if they do all the work. There must be somewhere that you can buy the brake and exhaust parts from other than a dealership?
I would be greatful of any advice you can share with us.
well worth looking in the For Sale section on here or watching eBay too, as these are parts that many people upgrade so you can pick up an exhaust for a nice little price of about £50 used if you are lucky
I had to change my exhaust on 52 cooper. I haven't seen piece of metal corroded that much in my life(well i have!). I got a brand new exhaust from mini2 fellow member for £25, and got it changed for £30. contact to Yellow_Mini_Scott he has a cooper exhaust for sale.
As about the pads, take it to kwik fit, they check your brakes for free, and would suggest you if you need to change your discs.
you can get front pads for £18 and the rear one for £21.
here are the websites for brake pads. REPLACEMENT FRONT BRAKE PADS REPLACEMENT REAR PADS
