| OllyH | private plate help! Hi everyone Have just purchased a private registration for my car but wondered if anyone knew where I could get it made up. I went to one retailer today but they weren't able to do the plate as I would like. If possible I would like to have al the charecters together, not with the space between the first four charecters and the last three. I understand this isn't following the regulation spacing, but I see plenty of cars with number plates like this. Just wondering if anyone could help me out and point me towards a place to get it done. I am in the Midlands, so anywhere near there would be great! Cheers, Olly |

| The Power Cube | I'd go to some off-the-beaten-track garage. Nowadays any reg plate has to be created legally including presentation of registration documents etc. All in a fight to battle fraud. Personally I really dislike regplates that have incorrect spacing, or even worse, modified letters or screw fixings - to me it's as bad as wearing a t-shirt that says "Rocksport" If you want a real reg plate, buy a real reg plate, otherwise who are you kidding? just my comment - ahem. Cheers, K. ![]() Too many mods to list, PM me if the cat needs killing... |

| "I'm kind of a big deal" | You'll probably only be able to purchase an illegally spaced plate online. By law, all retailers making number plates have to print their name and postcode on the bottom of the plate. This means that when (and it'll only be a matter of time) you get pulled and given a £60 fine for your plate (been there, done that) the retailer will then get a visit from the local constabulary and also possibly slapped with a fine which can be up to £5000, hence your difficulty in finding someone willing to make your plate to your requirements! I assume your plate only makes sense as a private reg when the digits are moved together? |

| Bring the noise | There are some firms on the net which will make up show plates. They are not road legal and won't require any paperwork to order. They do state that these are not road legal. Personally I'd go for a proper reg and plate. I could have my full name with enough bolts and insulation tape ! ![]() |

| "I'm kind of a big deal" | They're just the peeps that haven't been pulled. Yet. After having a mis-spaced plate on for 3 years with no hassle, i got pulled twice in two months. Two £60 fines and two letters from the DVLA threatening to take my reg off me (you never actually 'own' a reg). Trust me, it'll happen. I had SIII MNB spaced to read SIIIMN B. |

| OllyH | If it really is that much of a problem then I think I will have to go for the regular option. Didn't think it would be such an issue really - not as if I am using brackets, or coloured screws etc. Just see so many people with highly illegal plates that I didn't think one spacing would be a prob. |

| "I'm kind of a big deal" | Its a shame, i know. I always said i'd space my plate how i wanted til i got a fine and then put it back to standard! Its mainly down to police vehicles being equipped with ANPR, Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems because the system can have trouble reading mis-spaced plates. The system reads your plate and cross-refers it on the Police National Computer to see if the car is stolen, taxed, has outstanding warrants etc. Speed cameras are also increasingly using this too. |

| "I'm kind of a big deal" | The other option is to have the rear plate standard and just space the front one how you like. A police car passing you in the opposite direction is less likely to do a u-turn just to come and tell you off about your plates than one travelling behind you. |

Offline | Yes, I have. The BMW dealer bunched up the letters on my private plate (I didn't request this - they obviosuly just thought it looked better!). Anyway, two years later, I was pulled by the police, and asked to change it back to legal (I had to do this within 21 days, getting the notice signed by an MOT station and sent back to the police hq). I'd seriously doubt you'd ever get a fine or points for this, unless of course you refused to change it back. |

| "I'm kind of a big deal" | A fine is very common in the North Wales area where i work. Mind you, the Chief Inspector is that flipping Brunstrom bloke. You know, the one with a speed camera fetish..... If you're not familiar with his 'work' check out what the world (and other officers think of him) here: ABD - Richard Brunstrom the Association of British Drivers saw fit to dedicate an entire page to him! |
