Angry Speed Van - Can they tell?

Okay, so I was a bad boy today. Over took a lorry, came around the corner onto a mile long straight (no junctions, or other cars, 8.10am). I was doing 70mph, in a 60 zone. And heres the speed van sitting. Hit the brakes down to 50.
I was in the works van (Renault Traffic), and iv just been informed I should only be doing 50.

Basically, will they have got me anyway as soon as I came into view?

Also, I know about the 10% +1 or 2. So I might be lucky if Im allowed to do 60 in the van, but if not, can they actually tell what type of vehicle it is?

ie If I was doing 65 in a 60, I wouldnt get snapped, but that would really be 15mph over the limit for a van. (makes sence in my head!)

Yeah I know I shouldnt have been speeding in the first place, but please let us not go into that.

thanks
bryce

probably not, they generally use the speed linit plus 10% plus 2 mph, i.e. 69 in a 60. This said I've been done at 33 in a 30 in Slough before.

Depends really why it was there. Could be just to make traffic slow down, but if it was situated just around a blind bend, you can bet it was "active".
Depends what they clocked you at and the weight of the van. If the van is over 2ton you should have been sticking to 50mph. Renault Traffic - you'll have to do the maths on that one?
You'll soon know.

Wasn't a blind bend, sweeping corner just before it.

The van is only 1.7tonne max.

Iv heard its quite quick. Around a week?

Yeah, but if you have to send your license away it takes forever (10 weeks for me). Big issue especially if you need a hire car at any time.

The likelyhood is that they were just pinging vehicles exceeding the speed limit on that section of road rather than vehicles exceeding the prescribed limit for the class of vehicle.

Car derived vans (thats the key point) up to 2 tonnes fully laden use the same speed limits as cars but "goods vehicles not exceeding 7.5 tonnes max laden weight" are restricted to 50 mph on single carriageways and 60mph on motorways and dual carriageways. As the Renault Traffic is not car derived, this means you!

I didn't know that!

I was driving a new Ford Transit towards the end of August on a dual-carriageway at 70mph, drove past a police officer (on a motorbike) with a mobile device set up on a tripod, and he gave me one long stare as I drove past. Looks like I was breaking the speed limit. Oops. Oh well, I hope that within 2 and 1/2 months I would have heard by now even via the rental company.

It was an interesting drive, the Transit was a 2006 (pre latest facelift) model but really was shocking in every way. The gearbox was a hammer connected to a box of jelly, the steering was so unbelieveably vague with lots of play, the brakes were actually dangerous, the cabin and use of plastics I'm sure haven't changed since 1986. I was so so surprised - I thought vans had become a lot better, I can't believe traffics and sprinters are that bad.

You should be fine mate. I drive a Vauxhall Vivaro (Same as the Traffic) at work quite often, and i asked a copper about this car derived van effort. He said i would be fine in the Vivaro.

The speed laser cameras have a range over 1Km and tend to like straights where you can't see them and overtake . Unlikely they would be hiding around a bend.
