My MINI failed its MOT today :(

On the fact that the drivers side dipped beam headlight dosent seam to be working correctly. They swapped the bulbs over from drivers side to passengers and it still made no difference. Alligment was checked as well seams to me almost the reflector isnt working as its not showing the same light as the other light under the tester machine. Cant tell no difference to look at them away from this machine. The bulbs are fine and not broken.

I think its BMW that have broke them ether when they changed the headlight under warrentry back in 2004 due to chrome comming off around the headlight. OR when they resprayed her bonnet a month ago and perhaps took the headlights out to do this?!. Does any know if they take the headlights out to repray an R50 bonnet? i am 99% sure BMW have broken it. 1% of me thinks its maybe what i have heard on here that its a fault with R50's that each time you shut the bonnet it damages the headlight.

Its going in this week to be looked at to see whats wrong with it under warrentry hopefully (that ends 07/01/07) and it will then have to go back to Quickfit to be tested for that, which the charge me 20 for!! rip off!

They also said that i need new front brake pads in about 2000 miles time, which i was shocked at! is this average ish?? think ill just get the normal bmw MINI brake pads to replace them.

But i couldent belive it my baby failed, one upset MINI owner

I'm sorry to hear that Vikki, I know how much you love Chilli! At least you will hopefully be getting the headlight fixed under warranty, just a pain you have to pay for another retest

Unlucky. I doubt it happened when the bonnet was resprayed though.

It will be the auto alignment that has failed. A common problem unfortunately.

Had it happen on my Cooper Works. First on one side then both. It was fixed by BMW without replacing the headlights and was fine for the next couple of years I owned it.

It was acceptable in the 80's

If you ask then nicely i'm sure they wouldn't charge. Don't think that our garage would charge for a quick check like that.

will try that then worth a try

I was going to get extended warrentry with BMW, (dont trust any other warrentry you can get from other places from what i have heard). But they want 543 pounds and everytime i make a claim 100 excess it never used to be like that!

That will be because it's an insured warrenty, part of the FSA (Financial Services Authority and not the Food Standards Agency, just in case) regulations I think???? Most warrenties are heading this way from what i understand

I would say it's well worth getting the warrenty as you get energency service provided as well i think

warrantys direct have a good rep and come recommmend from honest john the telegra[hs motoring man ive got one with them and it even allows all work to be done at bmw and not their garages only cost me 180 for the year and has a 25 quid exess per claim as i thought minis was taking the p!$$ asking that much (most of the cost is paying the dealer for the privalge of letting them take it out for you)

confusion, madness and disorder .............. my work here is done

Vicki, it sounds like the little motor that moves the headlights up and down has stopped working on one side.

This has happened to me a few times and I can usually fix it by turning the ignition on and off (without actually starting the car) a few times.

You'll know if its working or not by parking in front of a wall with your lights on and moving the little headlight adjuster wheel on the dashboard (its by my left knee in my 2002 mini)

£20 is quite reasonable for a re-test. Some places charge the full amount again! You may in in a position to ask BMW to pay for your re-test if the only thing you failed on was the headlight. Doesn't your dealer do MOTs?

Hope this helps.

Simon
