Angry Car Crime - How to reduce / prevent it

Neighbour had the window to his car smashed by teenager scallies tonight - 4th in 3 weeks, 15th in 3 months;

Besides moving, how can we stop / catch / deter these little b*stards ?

Police are apathetic,

Neighbours never see anything

Am asking landlord for CCTV ...

as old bill I would never advocate it but you tend to find it usually is on the same night or when there is a local event on. I wouldn't advocate doing anythign from your house but I'm sure if you eve saw anybody then a quick entrance from a local side road screaming blue murder would have a desired effect! Other alternatives are the "mosquito" or my personal favourite an air rifle aimed at the legs from a non descript location (ie nowhere identifiable) P.S. as part of this during the day please check your local cctv so that those nondescript locations are not covered by cctv or entrance exit routes not to say that I haven't previously located scroats and cuffed em to a railing for a couple of hours and left them. for some reason nobody complains and crimes drop especially when it's cold and raining heavily (btw thick cable ties do the same job very well and don't leave fingerprints but I do have to say that u shouldn't really do this mmwwwwhaaah!!!)

You could fit a high wattage floodlight to the outside of the building, set to come on when it detects motion to light up the car/driveway. If they are cowards that might be enough to prevent them from damaging the car if they think they will be seen easier.

Unfortunately even if you caught them on webcam, I doubt the resolution would be good enough for the police to mount a successful prosecution. You can buy IP cameras which would be up to the job; they are designed to work over a network, but they aren't cheap.

I think an automatic flood light should be your first step, it's relatively inexpensive and just might work.

How are they getting to the car? Can you put a lockable gate in, that would be 'uncomfortable' to try and climb over? You could always fit a radio alarm to your house/flat, and put a radio contact on the gate so that the house alarm will sound if the gate is opened when the alarm is set?

If they are climbing over a wall to get to the car, it would be against the law to say, for example, fit strips of carpet grip along the top of it. But, it would be perfectly legal to plant the thorniest bush you can find for them to fall into when they climb over.

Failing all that, and assuming the police are still completely uninterested, you might just have to wait for them, dressed all in black with a balaclava and a baseball bat. Remember, go for the legs, you don't want to get done for murder, and just hope that the judge in your inevitable GBH case drives a MINI too!

Sounds like your neighbour is being targeted by these hooligans!
I think the best option is a CCTV camera and log "everything" Escalate to the Police and hopefully eventually they will take note.

We've installed CCTV in our shared driveway/garden - only cost about £80, works a treat.

Not that the police will do anything with the images. Actually, I lie, they'll give you a crime reference number and tell you to f off...

Gravel driveways are good for deterring people as they are really noisy to walk on, downside is that they are really messy and your neighbours will hate you.

Can you install an electric fence? Get cattle prods, I am sure they will do the trick

Maybe a little OTT, but in the James Bond film when the car was set to blow up when broken into, that seemed quite successful, they won't try that again in a hurry, or much of anything else to be honest.

You could fill the car with "dangerous" animals, so anyone breaking into them would get savaged, although the cleaning bill for the cloth / leather after the odd accident may mount up over time.

Apart from that, moving looks like the best option Find properties to buy, homes to rent, overseas houses and new homes on rightmove.co.uk

Erk - I typed www in before the rightmove web address and it filled all the extra gubbins for me

Lightbulb Fingers Crossed, Bat Ready

Thanx for the 'ideas'; chased & almost caught 3 of them the other night ... a bit of verbal abuse that there's nothing worth nicking seems to have worked

Have put 1cm x 3cm Stickers in car saying "STOP No Valuables" available from local Police Station; Don't Bother - No Valuables [AM0210] - £0.50 : Redline Security
Mikey may be able to order in bulk here: Solon Security | Don't Bother Kit

http://www.crimereduction.gov.uk/pub.../pdf/CCL01.pdf is worth a read.

Basically, what they say is "Reduce Opportunity, Reduce Incentives" Action Plan for Tackling Criminal Damage

Moving the concrete paving slabs the pleb who rents the house on the end's landlady had left probably helped too !!

Area is open plan, Management Company are looking at fencing, have a security light but there's so many taxis, deliveries, ppl coming & going it off & on all the time

- realised the brats must hang around 'til it's quiet so now go out & 'talk' to them when they do

Only other thing is spray the whole car with Smart Water like they use on bank notes (GMP probably don't have a UV light in there vans tho')
