Idle Engine Noise

I was wondering why my 2007 cooper s engine creates such a ticking sound at idle. It almost sounds like a diesel to my sensitive ears. It's a shame as it covers up the sound of the exhaust note which is taut and bassy. I know I'm splitting hairs but when showing my new toy to family and friends I generally left it running, and when " competitive" brother-in-law[vectra owner] takes a sharp intake of breath and says "sounds a bit rattley" what do I say? Even my mother noticed and living in Oxford too she has loads of friends who used to work at the Cowley Works when it was British Leyland and Rover. All these men who bolted together Marinas and Montegos were sucking air through their teeth with more force than my twin scroll turbo charger. "A new engine should be as tight as anything" they said while polishing their brown Morris Itals! Anyway it's such a tourqey flexible engine I think I can forgive it its little idle ticking habit.

Mine does this too, but it stops when I press in the clutch pedal. Strange, I agree.

Do a search on here for clutch and ticking, you'll find a whole heap of info about that problem

I'd do it for you, but there's so many I wouldn't find the relevant ones to your case
