I'm on my third windshield and that's got a chip in it as well, I just figured I'd wait for the next inevitable one before I replace it. I'm trying not find out what what my insurance company's limit on these is.

What are the typical prices for Windshield replacement in the US. I was just quoted $500 US by the local dealer here in Sacramento that Ive always had my suspicions with. A local glass shop only wants $213 US for instance. Also I thought for the life of me when I had ordered the Mini that it came with a heated windshield as a part of the US Cold Weather Package but looking around the cabin for the last 8 months for controllers and looking through the windscreen for wires Ive found nothing. Am I blind and just not seeing it or was it not a part of the 2006 model year US cold weather package. Finally if the windshield is heated what does that do to the replacement cost in dollar increase?

I think this post turned unexpectedly into 3? questions. Apologies for the long windedness.

My mini's three years old this year and after the third day of driving it, from brand new i required a new windscreen thanks to a stone chip. Fast forward to today thats gone replaced with another which has been repaired one every year so far. Screens thats old news i've also had both sides resprayed and twice at that, as the bmw bodyshop i used was woefull. Its the only car i've wanted to keep and fate seems to say - no thanks.

Tigger.

Yes - I do this and it does seem to help (in both cases! ) My only chips were from an unexpected salting machine when I was stuck in traffic and it flew the other way!!

Like the tank Tigger, thanks!

I once got hit in the windscreen with a brick that was wedged between the back tyres of a truck from a building site, and as it got up to speed the centrifugal forces were enough to dislodge it.

Needed a new windscreen, of course, but I was mighty thankful that:
  1. It hadn't penetrated through the windscreen and hit my in the head
  2. It hadn't hit the paintwork
Sometimes, it's just nice to find reasons to be thankful.

Yes that's right.. Minis just attract more stone chips than most of the cars out there, just because of their design.. more upright windscreens!! mine got the stone chip the very first day of new.. on the motorway.. so be careful when pass besides a lorry!!
