Thumbs down Disappointment

Really sorry if this disappoints, but I've been driving my brand new cooper S since December, it's black, it looks lovely but sorry BMW, it still disappoints! When will you get it right? I managed 70,000 miles in my old Cooper S (53 reg) and had fun with some minor faults like rear brake caliper failure and a succession of side windows trying to rectify the fault that puts a dirty strip up the inside of the door windows when they go up and down, even if the car is spotless inside and out. That's something they've perfected on the new one - it's not dirty stripes, it's a complete layer of greasy filth across the entire inside of the window... Seats? passenger seat release mechanism failed before there'd even been a bum on the back seat! The fault meant that the seat wasn't useable and just flopped about on braking/acceleration. Dealer quoted 5 weeks to sort the problem. When threatened with trading standards because the car was only 2 weeks old they managed to replace it with a seat from another car.

Has anyone else noticed the annoying torque steer? It pulls to one side on harsh acceleration. Not terribly refined. The old one didn't suffer from this.

And there's the gearbox noise, a grating sound you can hear and feel as you change down into second... According to the dealer In no way does it damage the engine, but the factory doesn't know what causes it. We'll call you when there's a fix."

I thought that this time they'd get it right, but the dealers still don't have any respect for customers and i think it's summed up by the section on the radio/info system that you can push to find out the contact number for the dealer - mine has a wrong number, a digit missing.

The tailgate doesn't close on the first attempt either, you have to slam it really hard!

Sill, it goes extremely well and looks good, if only the problems were sorted out before they were given to customers...

Mine hasnt borken yet - but It is making some odd gearbox noises. The torque steer is.bad especially when accelerating hard out of a junction - as you turn the car wants to help you turn even more. My abs or maybe the traction control makes weird noises when you go over a pot hole or bump too.

Brakes are bloody good though - I drove my ragtop today and it felt like the brakes had failed!

My worst gripe is the awful quality, downgraded standard stereo. I am having a big barney with BMW at the moment and they assure me it is better than the old car. This is ******** - they are either deaf or they want everyone to pay £350 for a semi-decent hi-fi.

My dealer (Chandlers, Hailsham) patronized me by saying I had the equaliser settings set wrong - this made me even more angry!!!

My vote is - The only thing I like about my new Mini is the Turbo over the Super Charger and the fact my drivers electric window still works.. oh and the tax is a bit cheaper.

i'm trying to resist getting on my soap box with this one! On one hand i'm pleased that your dealer is as crap as any of the ones in the Midlands, on the other, it's a disgrace that they can't get their act together! I know i moan like hell, but i can't think of anything that i'd swap it for. Maybe a golf gti - after 5 new VW's, there has only ever been one warranty claim, which was for parking sensors!

When you have the Mini Bug its very hard to get rid of it!! Most other cars I drive are boring compared to the Mini - I have had VWs in the past but will never return to them - I preferred my Leon Cupra to the Golf GTI

Mine is absolutely fine. Perhaps you have a duff one but my dealer hasnt been perfect but have responded to any query well. The car is absolutely fine, the stereo is great, no sign of torque steer (but then i dont rip the **** out of it with acceleration, if your acceleration is 'harsh' then you have an issue with driving style regardless of whether there is a fault with the car). I have absolutely no complaints at all.

Without the problems some have been having, I still think that there are some positive and negative aspects of the new car. i went for a 1 hr test drive alone in one, so I finally got the chance to drive an S properly. Just didn't find it as exciting as I thought I would, the new engine is a peach, torque across the rev range, power low down is great, but I don't care what anyone says, the car has lost some character. It is now just a Mini BMW, thought the handling was very good though, didn't experience any torque steer at all. I liked the dash especially, but again, for a decent spec your looking at £20k +, thats a lotta wonga!!

One other thing, the Sat-Nav is amazing, brilliant gadget, but when the only thing that really impresses is the Sat Nav well.........

Im just gonna wait for the JCW, that if they get it right then it could be stonking, otherwise I will not be purchasing my 4th Mini

At £21500 it's plenty! And how can a car with 'visibilty pack' not have heated mirrors?
