If your car was built before 1st Jan 1973 (it is built, not registered), then you can have black and white plates legally. Otherwise, no.

No, they haven't, the owner of the Focus is driving illegally.

To be honest, you're probably not missing out because every modern car i've seen fitted with black and silver plates looks flippin awful!

When was K reg (as a suffix ) then - circa '72?

I'm sure the K reg Cortina in Life on Mars (set in '73) has non reflective plates.

Probably got the historical accuracy right, but wouldn't it have been odd for a mainstream car to be sold 'back then' with the old style plates? All the new cars I recall from that period had white/black and yellow/black.

Reflective plates came in during the mid/late 60s didn't they? If so, there was a few years when you could either have reflective or black/white then if '73 is the legal cut off point.

And I'm of the opinion too that there's something not right about modern cars with old fashioned plates!

I've seen a black MINI ONE driving around with black plates too.

I couldn't see the point to be honest.

Some modern vehicles today are still fitted with Silver on black plates quite legally

Smile plates

I might be wrong on this, but i was on the understanding that its the year the plate was issued ie, pre 1973, so as an example you could put a private plate pre 1973 B&W on a modern car,

This is actually a fairly common misconception.

True, you can put any plate on any car (as long as it doesn't make the car appear younger than it actually is) but the style of plate to be used is dictated by the age of the car, not the age of the plate.

There is, it's the virtual non-existence of Police on the roads today.

And the ones that there are have got to be in a really foul mood to stop what appears to be an otherwise perfectly legal and roadworthy car.

Yep thats the case.
If your still not sure, contact your local RPG (road policing group) and they'll tell you its illegal.

See here if you're not, for some reason, convinced:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/lea...mberplates.pdf

The caveat is BUILT before 1st Jan 1973, which is why sometimes L (73) and even M (74) cars can legally have black/white plates on them. I had an L reg once, registered Jan 1973, which was allowed black/white as the assumption was that a VW Beetle wouldn't have been built, and then registered in the first few days of 1973.

not the answer you want to hear, but how about keeping dvla approved plates
but adding a vinyl "plate" to your bonnet, might be over kill, but could look good?

It's a bit the same as illegally spaced personal plates.

Someone at work ran round for months with some dodgy spacing on her Tigra.
When she was finally pulled over the cops said they'd spotted her a few times, but hadn't been in a position to nab her. As a warning they give her a week or so to have fresh plates made (which she did of course!)

SSL.

I had my reg with no space, had two warning (pushing luck), and the 3rd time they got a digital camera out to take a pic and send it to DVLA to ask for the reg to removed .

Managed to get out of that, and it was changed within an hour. My advice would be stay legal.
