been looking into that today, I never trust supermarket fuel as it normally comes from dubious refineries and normally has 5% ethanol which is bad for fuel economy, wont harm the engine though. I always fill up with V-power from shell, even enthusiastic driving gives me 30mpg

How about this for the most stupidest advice I've ever heard when related to a consumer product recall type issue -

Ray Holloway, director of Petrol Retailers Association says:

"Motorists who have not been affected could save themselves a bill by changing the petrol in their tanks. That would be my recommendation"

Why?

Change it for what - petrol that could still be contaminated if the dodgy stuff is still in the retail chain?

You could be clearing your tank of OK stuff and swapping it for rubbish, unless you take your car off the road until the scare is over!!!

Changing the petrol in their tanks?!?

That's easier said than done!

It seems to only be in the south east, if your in that area I def wouldn't fill up at supermarkets until its been sorted, as for changing the fuel in your tank, should this guy really be director of the petrol retailers association?? does he know how difficult and dangerous this could be?

My mate fills up his focus on tesco fuel and he thought his clutch had gone till he found out about the dodgy fuel and it's been confirmed that's the problem.

The mini only gets the best shell v-power

You wouldnt buy a cheap engine so don't buy cheap fuel

Just picked up my 07 Reg MC today and My dad has problems with engine light on. He has recently filled up at ASDA and Tesco in the Yarmouth,Lowestoft and Royston areas. It has been recommended that you fill up with high quality BP or Shell fuels to try and stop the problem before it affects the oxygen sensor. My dad did this to no avail so the future does not look good for his Vectra.

Heard a few things on the radio today and it "seems" the only brands affected are Tesco and Morrisons.

I will certainly only be using V power and giving the tesco 99 ron a miss for a bit.

right stop jumping to conclusions and beliving all the ***** on the news

i deliver petrol and diesel for a living

your tesco and asda petrol comes out the same tank at the refinery as the shell/BP/total petrol does the only difference is that shell/BP/Total add an addative to the fuel as its being pumped into the lorry its the same fuel so just using shell or BP wont really make a difference if these fuel stations are being supplied from the same refinery

I live in Herts and filled up using Tesco 99RON on Tuesday. My car seems to be OK, but I am now going to be using only Shell V Power from now on during this scare, especially as it's in this area!

This is getting silly - if you read the BBC website 'have your say' section it seems that thousands are blaming tesco for their recent engine management / catalytic / or oxygen sensor problems.

With over twenty million cars on UK roads (or a similar figure), if you expect 1 in 50 cars to develop such a fault annually that's 8,000 in one week!

Regardless of whether some contaminated petrol has entered the chain and is causing some damage to some cars, you can't blame every breakdown on the fuel purchased over the last weeks.

If you drive an old car, buy supermarket petrol, if you drive a newer decent / expensive car why would you use supermarket petrol? Shell V-power or equivalents may cost more at the pump, but you get better fuel consumption (eliminating much of the extra cost), and the engine is smoother especially when cold.

If you drive 10,000 miles a year, and achieve 30mpg, and after the fuel economy gains of the above you are still paying 2p/litre more - that's only £30 extra a year!

I've found the Tesco 99 to be really good, better than BP Ultimate and no real difference to Optimax in the Cooper S.

That may be the case - my observations are purely based on my own experience of using Sainsburys or Tesco standard 95 or super 97 against Optimax (V-power) or Ultimate.

My MINI cut out today, having filled up on Tesco 99 yesterday and its never done that before, infact it did it twice in traffic today :s Hoping its ok.

For reference changing the fuel on a mini is fairly straight forward, drain most out under the bonnet with the ignition on to prime the pump, then use the inspection cover in the boot floor to drain the rest, and make sure both tanks are empty.

You can check the amount in each tank in litres on the mileage readout

Just I don't think your average "I only touch the yellow bits under the bonnet" driver isn't really likely to be willing or able to drain and replace a tank of fuel safely.

I filled up at Tesco at the weekend, I assume my MINI is ok as its been a few days and that any loss in power is just in my head now!! And the fact I stalled it once this week, well, i'll put that down too my divvy footwork lol!! All that aside, I do know of two cases of burnt out oxygen sencors this past couple of days, unfortunatly they filled up at the same Tesco fuel station but I'm not gonna believe the hype just yet!!..
