Offline | Both are gorgeous Minis. Sadly I can't say the same for the R56. I don't think it captures the design prowess and spirit of the classic Mini as well as the R50/53 did. Just my opinion, of course, but I know I am not alone in that line of thinking. '02 Cooper CVT PW/B '05 MCS CR/W |

Offline | I think the comparison is a perfect example of how Stephenson missed the point of the Mini. While the "new" car is attractive in it's own right, it's twice as big! The Mini is about economy. While BMW finally figured that out with the improved mileage of the R56, it's still relatively enormous. Smart, Toyota Aygo, and many other small cars capture the spirit of Issigonis' purpose much better... but I digress. It could be worse though. That Traveller/Clubman abomination is horrid. It reminds me of a recent Top Gear episode where Clarkson and Co. made stretched limo versions of various cars. Sawzall and a bit of tin in the middle. Adding insult to injury, BMW is bringing back the baby-"poop"-brown (BSB) color. I can picture an executive strolling around a Bavarian footpath, admiring the color of the excrement coming from the back of a German "honey wagon" (fertilizer truck), and thinking he should use the color in a paint scheme. Probably the same guy who hired Bangle. |
