New Heated Windscreen

Had a big stone hit my windscreen today and crack it significantly. Autoglass are coming to fit a new one on Saturday.

I told them they need to bring new A pillar cover but they said that if I wanted a windscreen with the logo in the corner that Direct Line won't pay for that and that I would have to pay the difference?

Is that right?

I want a windscreen with the MINI logo on not a cheaper one.

HELP

Why are you so certain that the screen Autoglass will fit is 'cheaper' than one from MINI?

Has it not occurred to you that a 'genuine' MINI one is, in fact, exactly the same, but with a logo on it?

The only reason a 'genuine' MINI screen is more expensive is because of the massive mark-up dealerships put on everything they sell!

hmm i dont think it is the same scrogg as the original one. I spoke to autoglass and bmw and they said in the end they arnt the same after autoglass lying to me saying it was the same . The autoglass one is cheaper and imo more likely to chip and crack. I know only to well went through 3 in 2 months before finding out about genuine bmw mini one and its been fine since with stones hitting it. Autoglass ordered one in with the MINI logo on and cost me no more.

Thanks Vikki. Do I need to pay close attention to anything when they come to fit it?

When I claimed through MINI insurance at first I got the same response. After two phonecalls they realised that my policy entitled me to genuine parts and it was immediatley authorised for a genuine screen. Autoglass picked it up from the dealers the same day - receipted & logo'd.

It depends on your policy - if your policy states original manufacturer parts then the insurance should authorise Autoglass to supply a genuine screen. If this is not the case then you will have to pay the difference. (Does not mean you cannot try to talk the insurers around - stranger things have happened......)

Its a very difficult job and the only way to get through it is we all work together as a team.....

Yes, when they have finished the job make sure the following things are ok!! I work for Autowindscreens so hopefully i should be able to help.

First of all make sure the top trim is tight, some fitters put the window in and just leave it as is, when i fit mini screens i always make sure mine are tight to the top, this will ensure the top trim doesnt fall out!! Also make sure they use either the origional top trim or get a new origional top trim, dont settle for universal trims, they should not charge you for this!!! (Make sure they Don't).

Also side trims (Exterior A-pillar trims) make sure they are tightly put on, there should be very little or no movement at all.

Next is the bottom part of the trim (Silver parts) Make sure the fitter doesnt snap the clips that hold the silver parts in place, if he does get him to replace them Free Of Charge. Also make sure he doesnt glue them down, i have seen this happen and they are pain to get off if the screen needs replacing again.

With regards to screens, most companies say there screens are just as good as the BMW ones, this may be true but still.. get a Mini logo'd one, better to have a standard install rather than after market screen been installed.

The Mini screen will most likely be made by Pilkingtons, saint-goblins (Spelling) or other major screen makers on behalf of Mini.

Make sure the fitter also uses his sheets to cover the car with (Inside and Out),

I would also mention to him that you expect the car to be Anti-rust pretected as well, again this should be used on everyjob (Company standard procedure) but again i have seen people not use it. The effect of this is holes in apatures (Were the screen sits) also major rust problems.

apart from this there realy not much you need to worry about. (Leave it to stand for and hour minimum, this will ensure safe deployment of the airbags in the event of a crash) if not left for an hour (Dependent on glue manufacturer drying times) your window could leak.

Hope this helps

Thanks. They have agreed to fit a genuine one now. I will watch like a hawk when they come to fit it and won't sign the paperwork unless I am 100% happy.
