Offline | newby Q's I'm about to order a Mini Cooper S (R56). In terms of handling, the dealer recommended NOT getting the DSC option, but getting the LSD instead. How does this sit with you guys? Agree? Also, I'm a bit worried about sunroof rattles. Have people had significant issues with rattles in the sunroof? |

Offline | No personal experience about LSD v DSC. I have had a DSC system in my last car (VW) which was fantastic. I have ASC+T now which seems OK, not too intrusive. On sunroof, unless you REALLY want it, why bother? Order something else nice instead. Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | I too deliberated about DSC. I definitely knew I wanted LSD (I waited for UK March delivery date which was when LSD became available), but was originally unsure about getting DSC? In the end (after some other posts/replies in this forum - do a search) I went for BOTH. Having LSD will, by nature, mean the DSC should cut-in later due to the LSD doing it's stuff first. Also, remember you can easily switch off DSC via button press. DSC should provide some safety if things go badly wrong (remember, not foolproof though, laws of physics, etc.). Personal driving experience since getting my R56 S... so far (only 800 miles, so not ripping it fully yet) all seems to be fine with LSD and DSC working together. I've not experienced the DSC auto cut-in yet (it's been a remarkably dry month here in Scotland ), but I have felt the LSD doing it's stuff on heavy/loaded cornering. And, generally, I'm well pleased with the handling lack of DSC intrusion. |

Offline | Just like scotland67, I waited until March to make sure I got the LSD. So far I have had no handling issues with the LSD/DSC combination, but we are still running-in. Unless you are a budding racing driver, I would always spec the DSC on any new car especially here in the UK where most roads don't come with nice grass run-off areas. If you make a mistake it's normally a hedge or a ditch. As scotland67 says you can always turn it off. If you are still unsure about DSC, search the previous posts on this site and watch the video on whatcar.com As far as the sunroof goes, I had exactly the same concerns as you do, so didn't spec it. |

Offline | I had an R53 Cooper S for 6 months, and the DSC drove me MAD. I'm fairly certain that this is due to my driving style, but every time I pulled away from the lights and wanted to get ahead a bit, the DSC would foil my plans. I'd much rather (attempt to) control and deal with wheel spin myself, rather than having some "external force" adjusting my car. Of course it isn't actually external - but the feeling always reminded me of being on a bridge with strong sideways winds - like someone is messing with your driving :P I know the DSC only cuts in to help me out when I've made a mistake, but for that reason I never truely learned how to prevent it from happening. I'm probably not that good a driver though ![]() |
