Just thrashed the pants of it over to Lytham and Back and recorded another new record on the way home!

New top Mileage of 330 miles!

Record low 230!

So is 350 - 400 achievable in a cooper???

It certainly looks like it with careful driving?

350-400 miles should be easily achieveable if you try to drive economically and are driving in the right conditions. In theory on a flat uninterrupted road in perfect conditions you could achieve 550 miles from a standard Cooper. But you'll never find a flat road without traffic for 550 miles!

If you concentrate, including coasting downhill, then across distances without traffic you can realistically get 40mpg, but this is hard work. My record is 50mpg (measured pump to pump) over 255 miles but this was averaging 50-60mph on very flat roads and driving very lightly. However I have no problems getting less 250 miles from a tank.

I've pretty much always used Shell Optimax / V-Power and I don't think it improves the power output of a standard Cooper, but the engine feels a lot smoother when it is cold than on other standard unleaded fuels and it does feel more keen than on other 97 fuels. I've never tried Tesco 99.

Hi, how about this...

My MCS used to average about 250 miles to the tank, i use it generally...being honest, high speed motorway driving apart from about 15 mins a day sitting in traffic on the m1 just before hemel..... works out about 350 miles a week.

However, doing the same route a the same speeds since my first oil change and putting the pirreli run flat tyres on the front, (still got decent dunlops on the back) that my miles now average about 235 per tank...

This is now costing me a fortune and im considering taking it back to be checked over, but has anybody else noticed this with the pirelli tyres or even the firs oil change? I would expect it to be more efficient!

Thanks
Mike

I have 3 Dunlop RF's and One (odd) Pirelli Euphoria RF. I had an oil change 13000 miles ago and it didnt make any difference (or at least any noticeable distance) to my fuel economy

I'll add my stats to the list, as I keep a record on all my 'fleet':

2004 MC, recorded mileage today -102,069.

Average fuel consumption 37.39 mpg (7.56 l/100km), with a 'best' of 46 (drifting around France with time on my hands) and a 'worst' of 31 (in a long thrash of over 600 miles). I've always used 95, mainly from Tesco in the UK and from Leclerc in France; average fuel cost is GBP310.78 per month or 10.7 pence per mile.

During that time is has consumed 10 tyres and 2 wiper blades... I'm still running on the OE pads! As you can tell, I don't do short commutes and rarely use the brakes; this is the car I use myself. Due to the high residuals and TLCxl, this is the cheapest vehicle to run that I've had, less than a Ford Courier diesel van and cheaper than a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta that ran until 161,000.

R56 MCS arrives on Thursday but I'll run that on Tesco 99.

I have to agree that on Vpower mine gives more of a kick in the back when you hit the gas.

I have just used the spreadsheet that was very kindly emailed to me by Humph But the MPG value being calculated seems to god to be true... 55.8 mpg

I have attached a screenshot of my input into the spreadsheet which I wil explain to makle sure I have inputted it right....

1) Started using the spreadsheet 2 fill ups ago. Start mileage before the fill up was 75030
2) Filled up for a second time at 75340 miles (so 310 miles travelled)
3) Starting in cell E4 I started to fill in my second fill up data (as instructed to on the instructions sheet). Second fill up consisted of £25 worth of Tesco Super Uunleaded 97 (25.28 litres).
4) My MPG value comes out a 55.8.

Is this right? I have inputted everything as it says on the instruction sheet but 55.8 seems too high?

Thanks

Dan

For it to work you need to start off with a full tank, record mileage, drive until you need to fill up again, record mileage and fill tank to full again and keep note of number of litres (or gallons) used to fill up. If you only put £25 of petrol in I'm guessing you didn't put a full tank in (if you're driving a mini that is).

Hi Dan,
The figures the spreadsheet is churning out are correct. Distance travelled 310, and 25.28 litres of fuel is (25.28/4.55 = 5.55 gallons approx). So 310/5.55 = 55.8 MPG. I think the problem is with the amount of fuel you put in as stated above, or more likely the start mileage. The car needs to be full when you record the start mileage, I'm guessing yours wasn't. Delete your start mileage (75030) and put your end mileage (75340) in cell B4 instead. When you fill up again and record the end mileage the results should make sense. The sheet only works if you are filling the car up to full (let the pump cut out, but don't "fill to brim"). You can use £5 of fuel and refill to full, no problem. What it won't let you do is use £20 and top up with £5, this will give misleading results.

I wondered if this was the case! The car was full on the start mileage. But when I filled up again I didnt fill up, I just put 25 in, so this will be the problem. i would normally fill up, but due to money issues i didnt. I will start the sheet again once I fill up next week for work

Cheers!
