Locked Out of Car on the M1

I was working in Harrogate for a couple of days, coming home this afternoon - down the M1 to Northampton.

I'd filled the car up with screenwash last night, and heading down the M1 (about Junction 47) noticed some vibrations from the front of the car - I'd forgotten to shut the bonnet properly - stopped the car, clicked on the unlock, jumped out, shut the bonnet and went to get back in, but the vibrations caused by a passing Lorry managed to shift the lock on the door from open to half closed - and I was locked out.

Phone was in the car, but I had heatset on so could receive calls, but could not make them.

So I went off to the emergency phone (bad reception), was visited by Highway "Patrol", they had a quick look, but couldn't get in.

AA came after I'd been waiting for 1 1/2 hours - took them about 5 - 10 minutes to get in, no damage (thankyou MR AA Man)

Engine had been running the whole time. Had Critical "PowerLoss" warning when I got in, but was fine when I got underway.

Anyway, it's another Mini Adventure

Anyway, I'm home now..

Glad you resolved it!
I had to call my wife to bring her keys once when I locked the doors on my running car in the lot at work at didn't notice till I tried to go out for lunch!
What's a Critical "PowerLoss" warning? Don't recall hearing of it.

Good old AA.
I bet he couldn't believe it that you managed to lock your keys in the car on the motorway.

Thanks

When I managed to speak to my wife (the controller phoned her for me and asked her to call me (only had the headset)

Wife did offer to bring the keys, but with the Northbound traffic would have been a 3 / 4 hour journey for her (6 hour round-trip)

In terms of the crtitical poerloss warning, I imagine it was 1 and a half hours of lights on / ipod on / sat nav on with engine idling the whole time, not something that happens everyday. It was an Orange / Yellow picture of an alternator (I think - I am colour blind and don't know what an alternator looks like, but I imagine it looks like the picture that apeared on the display (R56 MCS)

When he turned up, he said he was looking forward to hear how it happened - he'd had a best with his colleague.

Lucky he could get in, as getting on the back of a flatbed may have broken part of the car, as handbrake was on, plus if I had a tow connector, it was in the car, so I would not have been able to use the "normal" tow method - and with the soft grill, it would have broken.

With the engine running it would be easy. Just need to squeeze a hook through the frameless window. Flick the unlock switch et voila.

It was acceptable in the 80's

I thought I was the only one who did that I got it to go with my inflatable trolley jack and dehydrated socket set (just add water)

It was acceptable in the 80's

The unlock switch didn't play ball - it is harder than you'd expect to flick up - was also a bit far away.

He did have a hook that fit snugly to the door opener and that worked a treat.

It's not as easy to get the wire past the frameless window though, As to how he did that bit, I'm not sure I'm allowed to say, incase nefarious people are watching?

I will wait for someone to respond before saying - or you can PM me )

How frustrating for you. But...

...you still haven't told us how you would avoid the same situation in the future.
