Deal or no deal

I have test driven a 2005 Mini with electric windows/sunroof stereo, leather w seat warmer. It has 50,000 miles on it. The dealer said that the oil has to be changed every 6,000 miles at $120 then a mandatory 60,000 mile tune up at $2000 and these have to be done at a BMW Mini Cooper service site. The nearest site is 150 miles away in Atlanta, GA. They offerred (?) a 100,000 mile warranty at no extra cost (?). The final Offer was $18,200.
The local paper just published a review of the 2007 Mini with the starting cost approx $19,500 to 21,000.
Is the service this difficult/ expensive and in reality would a BMW service center be able to do any maintenance that is needed?

With the cost of the new Mini is this a reasonable price? Thank you for any advise and wisdom. Dawn in Birmingham

Any decent garage can provide the service. Now that my service plan has run out, it will never be back to the dealer.
That 100,000 mile warranty - I think it is only for rust - not for all issues. Better read the fine print. If it is a true warrant, it is nice - but from the dealer, not from MINI.

On price, it depends. The options sound pretty high-spec. It may be worth it. Is it an S or standard Cooper? Personally, I'd rather have an '06 than an '07 myself. I'm not about to tradein my '04.

I would hesitate to call that dealer a liar but they certainly seem to be either careless with the truth or terribly misinformed on MINI servicing requirements. I suggest you ask them to show you the servicing recommendations in the owners manual, after all if they read it as well they might learn something.

The service indicator will show you when the next service is due and whether it is an oil change or an inspection. For cars travelling less than 6000 miles a year the oil should be changed every 2 years. Maybe this is where the dealer got the idea of an oil change every 6000 miles from.

Well lets start with the oil change. If you check the instruction manual the first oil change is @ 10,000 miles. The second change is @ 25, 000 miles. I'm not sure how often it's done after that, but one of the selling points was that it used fully synthetic oil which had to be change less often. On that alone I'd not trust that dealership. As for the price of the change that sounds a bit too high. I was quoted $75 and after the warranty has run it's course I'll do it myself.

Usually a 'warranty' is tied to dealer servicing.... so thats why its 'mandatory', otherwise they could refuse to honour the warranty if you dont have the service.

Personally, its sounds a better financial option to buy the new car, which comes with warranty for three years. Doesnt sound much more expensive, although I guess this would be a low spec car compared to the one you have looked at.
