As an aside, one of the original ideas was that maybe an aftermarket company was using the cars for a body kit or something. The plates are BMW plates, they seem to use the 15776 plates on their BMWs and MINIs.

I wonder also if there's a reason for the lack of tail pipe trims this time out?

It could be am old disguised R56 that they never bothered to pull the disguise off of - now being used for long-term JCW engine upgrade testing or similar ...

Could it be a Californian company working on a zero emissions/hybrid or all electric car?

See above, the plates tally with many BMW vehicles (owned by BMW) so I doubt that very much.

People have suggested JCW, and there was a Cooper and Cooper S in the previous photos on The Car Connection, so who knows?

Facelift already perhaps? Still doesn't explain the exhaust trim missing though.

Could they be testing aftermarket parts/JCW bits, maybe the trim is missing to allow larger exhaust tailpipes to be fitted?

May be a trick of the "cloaking" and colour, but it does look to be sitting lower than a regular 2nd Gen S would do.
