Beats me why the SATNAV's have not got code numbers....se every time you start it you have to enter a code...if not no use.

Surely that would almost instantly cut thefts if they knew a cetain make was useless if stolen ?

TomTom's have but it's not switched on by default. I believe Garmin are jumping on the bandwagon and doing this now though.

It was acceptable in the 80's

I was going to say the same. It would make no difference. Casual thieves would sell them on to someone who has the know how to reflash them. More experienced thieves may already have the tools for the job. The trouble is now, with standardisation, they all come with a USB lead for updating them so thieves don't even need a specific connector. They just download the software off the net and away they go.

Hi all,
Totally agree withthe never have your actual address as the home location - mine is my regular cafe close by.

However, isn't it a legal requirement to carry a copy of your insurance certificate in the vehicle at all times?
This of course has your address on it...........

Keys-wise my house and car keys are always seperate, that's just common sense really.

Cheers, Geoff.

Don't think its a legal requirement , you get two weeks to produce it at the cop shop if needed.

It is a legal requirement yeah!
Also a requirement for both parts of your diving licence to be together (paper and photocard)
I don't keep mine together though as prev mentioned you get 7 days or whatever it is to do a producer at police station.

There is no legal requirement for you to have insurance certificate or driving license with you when driving. In fact, such is the freedom of this country, you need carry no documents at all except a tax disc. You just have to be able to produce them within seven days when asked by a police officer. The car is probably the worst place to leave any legal documentation and is better off locked away somewhere safe, like a erm... safe!

License and insurance details can be obtained very easily by the police over the phone anyway nowadays.

When I was pulled other month, he advised that I should have had both parts of the driving licence and also my certificate of insurance, although he wasn't in traffic division, just normal routine patrol.
It's not the first a normal routine car has got it wrong, likewhen they tried to say my Sidelights on the MINI were foglights!

Unlike other EU countries, it is not a legal requirement in the UK to carry insurance documents or your driving licence. Or indeed any other car related paperwork.
The police would probably llke you to carry these documents (although all this information is now available to them through the DVLA) as no doubt a certain amount of time consuming paperwork is involved if they ask you to produce your documents at a police station. Time which would be better spent ..... errrr , well stopping other motorists I guess.
