Asked for 1st gear and got reverse!!!

I swear, it was not in reverse. I've had it a week. Sat. I go to Tractor Supply and stop to decide where to park. I think I put it in neutral. When I put it back in 1st gear it goes backwards. Luckily I barely had the gas on. I tried 3 times I think. Reverse (to make sure) then 1st, neutral - back and forth. Thought I was losing my mind. Reverse is left and up from 1st gear - like an H so it seems hard to miss distinguishing between the two. Called the dealer who said he never heard of such a thing. My husband was out of town but this morning said the same thing and to just wiggle it in neutral and try agin. Any else ever heard of - or have it happen to you????

The dealer was happy to have it picked up but said he would have to replicate the problem to fix it. Who knows when that might be.... So I've decided to see if it happens again.

it can depend on how much pressure you put on the stick

i find that if i just put a little pressure on the stick as i select 1st it is ok but too much pressure and i end up in reverse

I've made it a habit to use: neutral -> 2nd -> 1st
instead of: neutral -> 1st
to avoid hitting reverse by accident.

Thanks guys. At least you're making it sound possible - and not that I've totally lost my mind. I will try your recommendations.

the gate across to reverse is much lighter in the R56's, it was actually pretty hard in the older S's to get in to reverse. I did the same thing as you a cpl of times in a courtesy car (R56 S) whilst my R53 was being repaired.

So, Mark-O - have you actually experienced this yourself?

What do you all recommend I do? Just be careful, - do as Mark-O says - neutral, second and then first - or get it into the shop?

basically be careful when yu are selecting first

do it with a light touch as too heavy will allow you to select reverse

this is my usual modus operandi

It's happened to me 2X, both when starting put from a stop light. The first time it took 3 tries to get into first, the car kept going into reverse where first should have been, the second time a few days later it happened again but only went into reverse 1 time.

It was not driver error, I had no choice but to originally consider it (was I cracking up?), since no other reasonable mechanical explaination made sense, but when it happened the second time, I felt vindicated that after 31 years of driving I was not losing my mind. It has not happened since.

Good luck getting a dealer to duplicate this, hopefully if was a "glitch" that has fixed itself.

Hello.

Just caught up with this thread after doing a search.

I've had an intermittent problem for the last 6 months, when sometimes I put it in 1st and it ends up in reverse. The gearstick is definitely still where it should be for 1st and not so far to the left as reverse. I also find that when it happens sometimes I can put it back into 2nd and back to where 1st should be a few times before it'll end up being in 1st. It's been to the dealer 3 times but they haven't found anything wrong and it was so intermittent that I couldn't reproduce it. The car's a March 2007 and has only done about 8k miles.

I've just rang the dealer again today though, as it's just happened 3 times on a 10 minutes journey to work. I'm quite conscious of it and try not to push the gear lever too far to the left anyway.

Previously I thought it was after I'd selected reverse and then put it back in 1st, but definitely not today.

I had problems with 1st / reverse when i had a loan Clubman S - almost reversed it into a wall when trying to drive out of my space which is on a bit of a downward hill

Got an R56 MCS last week myself - it has parking sensors so beeps once when you select reverse - one good thing of the sensors

If I get a new mini, I'll have parking sensors. The beep when you select reverse is a bonus - you can use it as an excuse for when people ask why you have parking sensors on a mini!

6 speed. Is the beep when you choose reverse a new thing. Ours was built March 07, has parking sensors but doesn't beep unless there's anything behind it. It doesn't just beep when reverse is selected.

Infact, when it's got stuck in reverse in traffic, I don't think the parking sensors have beeped when there's been a car queing behind me.

Mine beeps once when you select reverse gear and then beeps when you get close to things

Mine is an April 07 build, bought used and the sensors were not fitted in the factory - think they were a dealer fit, not sure.

You may need to get the dealer to set them to beep when you put the car nto reverse
