If you do go the non approved route, watch out for the electrics it theres any electrical problems the dealer is likely to blame your non bmw harness on your towbar. Depends on how good/bad you dealer can be however a caution only. on my 55 plate cooper i went the bmw route but fitted it myself saving nearly 700 quid.
Generally I would agree with you Ady, but European Whole Vehicle Type Approval Directive 94/20/EC states that a motor vehicle manufacturer cannot prevent a franchised outlet from supplying or fitting components deemed to be of equal quality to that supplied by the vehicle manufacture, so, basically, it is now illegal to say that a Type Approved towbar (such as a Witter) will invalidate the car's warranty.
