Price Reductions off a purchase...

Hi All,

We are looking round the market for a MINI Cooper S Conv (Our Third MINI). We saw a different one at a national dealer today!

Though we are looking for a good deal, and saw a nice example of a Conv S today.

On the window price £12,896 through a national dealer. They apparently just reduced it, as its been on sale for a few months at £15k with no interest. So they are saying its cost them money, and not willing to reduce, and want rid now!

I asked if they would put 12 months tax (£225) into the price at £12,500 and seeed to 'um and er' positively at least. Though do you reckon (with current market conditions) i could get more off? Any ideas on how to go about it? What do you think they would take?

Its a cash sale, and part ex which is the same offer as selling back to the original dealer!

Any advice is appreciated

Thanks!

By National Dealer - i mean a Volvo dealership, not MINI

Without knowing how much the dealer paid for the car it is impossible to know what they will take. Anyone that says otherwise is just guessing.

How old is this particular car, and how much are similar cars on MINI Cherished?

If it is exactly 2 years old or newer it will still have at least 12 months MINI warranty left, but if it is any older than that the equivalent price from MINI Cherished will include a 12 months unlimited mileage MINI Cherished warranty as opposed to the balance of the original 3 years MINI warranty.

On a totally separate note, if you do end up buying it don't let them service it, or do anything that involves putting a stamp in the service book, as it will undoubtedly have the MINI TLC package which will be invalidated by a non-MINI service.

Thanks Scrogg

Well, i have no idea on how much they paid for it

16,000 Miles, MINI Cooper S Conv, 54 Plate with some small options- nothing that would increase price really, and Chilli Pack. TLC Pack, and i will ensure they havent stamped it either .
Erm, Owners unsure on, it was something i forgot to ask. General Condition was good, but would say Average for Glasses Guide Estimation.

Nope as its a Volvo dealer they offer a standard three month guarantee (Limited to £500 Limit each and every claim). No Warranty left on the MINI side of things though, as was registered Oct 2004 .

MINI Dealers i would say would put it up about another grand based on spec, but thats a guestimate based on current stock on Cherised website. Unlike Volvo they will sell based on car including Options, which Volvo are strangely ignoring.

I think glasses trade guide shows at £11,700 but unlikely they would buy it at that, as dealers trade seems v slow!

Any ideas Scrogg

Thanks

The only people that will know are the Volvo dealer themselves, but we've overcome bigger obstacles on here so don't worry

The chances are the Volvo dealer fell into the trap that most non-MINI dealers are still falling into of assuming used MINIs are still worth what Glass's Guide tells them, so they probably bought it in for whatever a Cooper S Convertible CHILI booked at a few months ago.

Do you know when they actually brought it into stock, or is 'a few months' the most information they gave you?

If I knew when they bought it I could look back through my old Glass's Guides tomorrow and give you a good idea of what they paid for it...

...but for now, assuming you are correct in that it books at £11,700 now (again, I can check tomorrow) it will only have dropped between £300-£400 in a few months, so they would need to be really keen to sell it to take £12,500 including the RFL.

(But don't kid yourself that trade is slow, January is traditionally a strong month for used car sales, and so far this one is no exception, so they probably aren't that keen)

The way I see it, £12,896 is between £600-£1,000 cheaper than a similar car from a MINI dealer...

...which would easily cover the cost of a top-notch warranty.

If you want this car more than any of the similar ones on MINI Cherished ask them to include 12 months RFL at the screen price. They'll probably have a bit of a moan and then agree to throw in 6 months and I think you'll have got yourself a good deal.

But hey, that's just my opinion!

Well its a done deal!

Scrogg, found out (after i looked in the glove box and found dealership paperwork lol), that it had 2 owners, they bought in October 07 @ £13,300.

Four days ago was sitting on forecourt at £14.998 and they had some interest but wouldnt budge. Dealer principal wants rid of it, as its been sitting there for a month now, so reduced to £12,998 to get rid of it.

Deal wise, i managed to get it at £12,500 with 6 Months RFL. They wouldnt do anything else, they said they couldnt and had nothing else left in it, they just want it sold now!

Spec wise:

Cooper S Conv
Dark Silver / Black Hood (No Marks / Damage)
Chilli
17inc Alloys inc RF
Additional Front Spots
Bluetooth
Heated Seats
Chrome Interior
Stereo Upgrade (Not HK)
Bonnet Stripes
MFSW
Reverse Sensors
Auto Aircon
54 Plate
3 Month Guarantee

16k Miles. TLC, One Service so Far at Benham MINI.

So all in all, seems a very good deal, as a franched MINI dealer would have had it up at a higher price. Collect it next weekend

Thanks for help, and seems to be a good deal Scrogg
