Offline | MPG Question? I understand how to calculate MPG but would like to know when a MPG figure is quoted in the UK, is it using US or UK gallons? Obvioulsy when I fill up my car in the UK, I'm not sure how many gallons I put in my car but I do know how many litres, to convert the litres to gallons I need to know if the figure quoted uses US or UK gallons? I reguarly drive between Sheffield and Newcastle and I'm considering buying a Cooper S but I want to get a feel for how much the round journey would cost (145 miles each way). |

Offline | Not sure if its cos mines not a JCW - only a standard MINI Cooper S, or because I don't drive as hard, but I find I get about 37-40 on a Motorway. I'd say it would take me about 3 quarters of a tank for the round journey you say above, and that would be £35-ish. I find that around town though I only get about 23-25 to the gallon though (although this varies and for short distances I've recorded as low as 13 mpg). |

Offline | Thanks thats pretty useful... I wanted to be conservative.. So I estimated a 290 mile journey (mainly motorway so the MPG is probably a little low) at 31MPG to cost around £45 thats with petrol priced at £1.04 I currently drive a 1.6 Focus and it probably costs me round £37 depending on how fast I drive. |

Offline | Are you thinking about an older R53 Cooper S, or the newer R56 as there is a huge difference in fuel consumption. In the R56 you can realistically get: 50mpg if you drive gently between 50mph to 60mph on a motorway. 40-45mpg at 70mph. Around town above 30mpg even pushing the car. ![]() Although I'm also sure you can get less than 20mpg if you try hard enough. |

Offline | Can the R56 MCS really get 50mpg in good conditions? In my R56 MC I've had 49mpg at best on a fairly past paced motorway run of 200 miles or so, mind you that was more or less fully loaded (two adults/teenager/luggage/full size spare wheel). A steadier pace and less weight on board would probably have seen 50+. My worst has been 37 mpg. Overall mean for 13 months of ownership (yes, I've been sad enough to work it out!) has been about 43 mpg - mostly on 25 mile round trip commuter runs. I'd have thought an R56 MCS would be a handful of miles down on these bests/worsts, with the first gen being a further handful down on those. SSL |

Offline | The claimed extra-urban figure for the MCS is now 54.3mpg (UK gallons obviously). I realise you wouldn't be able to achieve this but I have had a reported 51mpg (from the onboard computer) over about 60 miles of flat motorway. I haven't had the chance the verify the accuracy of the onboard computer (they tend to over read by 2-3mpg) but I reckon that I could have driven even more gently on that particular run. The R56 MCS is definitely more economical (only by a couple of mpg) than my R50 MC. I don't know how much the BMW efficient dynamics stuff makes a difference - obviously it does in town driving because the engine switches itself off. ![]() |

Offline | And it's a good job the MC R56 has such good fuel economy as it gets the most range out of the pathetically small tank (40 litres I think). The R56 MCS has a 50 litre tank though doesn't it? SSL |

Offline | I recently did a 500 motorway mile round trip in my R56 JCW MCS, obviously sticking to the speed limit (well mostly) and got 44mpg. I noticed that MPG overall is about -10% since JCW kit went on so I reckon, with a bit of sensible driving, 50mpg in an R56 is attainable. |
