Nationwide clampdown on number plates

Follow a piece on our local news tonight about a crackdown on Number Plates that are
'Not Standard', I put a search in Google the result is here
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Number+plate+crack+down&meta==

Seems it is Nationwide, a member on ECMC got stopped on his way home.

He was let off with a warning but has to put it right ASAP.

Black number plates with silver or white numbers or letters may only be displayed on vehicles manufactured or registered before January 1, 1973.

That's someone stuffed then with a MCS in PW, think his is with ECMC and no doubt the person Phoenix is on about.

Quote:
Self adhesive number plates are illegal (i.e. plates stuck on the bonnet or sticker style plates.)

That's some of the Mini's stuffed then.

Good.

Generally speaking the vast majority of 'personalised' number plates with squiffy fonts and logos look rubbish and I doubt they'd be picked up by speed cameras etc too?

No offence to those who've done it tastefully, but rules is rules...

There are hundered of dodgy ( fonts, additional lettering, colours & spacings ) number plates here in Blackburn. It seems to be a cultural thing that goes along side fully blacked out windows. Police here ignore it.

This has been going on for years and will continue while the ability to purchase the design of numberplates in wierd fonts or pics or spacing

If this was stopped then they wouldnt have to have this sort of national action

There are a load round here like that and even a Boxster with balck n silver

In the end it is beacuse of som much plate recognition software out there and if a font makes the plate differen tthen the wrong person can be charged etc

i rode my moutain bike to work today and at the end of my road was a volvo patrol car. I get to work and am just going through the door; my mate comes running upto me with a big grin on his face saying "paul has been tugged on the A30"

When i asked this guy paul later what happened he said they are there all day looking for cars with any type of number plate other than standard! He got a £30 fine.

Lucky i took my bike today!!

If it helps the ANPR vans get the uninsured/un-taxed vehicles off the road, I'm all for it.

couldnt agree more. although my black and silver plates were perfectly readable, they were the correct font & size. I know that doesnt make them any more legal though!

ive put the stock ones back on anyhoo, dont want to be stopped regardless

ha, so you'd think but in the last 6 years I've been stopped 7 times specifically so that the boys in blue can measure the spacing on my plate, even though it was supplied by the dealer with their name at the bottom. Oddly enough it was OK when it was on my Honda HRV for 2 years, it only started when it went on my first MINI.

They were all over Manchester today pulling loads of cars. We ate lunch near the city centre and they had traffic wardens, community support officers, traffic police, normal police and even the police helicopter at one point.

I'm gonna be putting my private plate on in March but not risking wrongly spacing it like I used to have it on my last car. It's not worth it.

Hopefully it means less uninsured drivers off the roads though which can only be a good thing.

I didn't realise that there were actually enough traffic police left to enforce such an operation I'd assumed that when all enforcement was done by camera and there were absolutely no traffic police left then removing number plates all together might become the norm!

Slightly more seriously, I guess it's a risk people choose to take when they mess around with their 'plate. However, why deliberately bait the police and hand them the opportunity (on a plate!) to stop you? There's every chance that they will then check the rest of the car for something else to make the pull more worthwhile..... Besides, number plates that actually say something, but are legally spaced, are much cooler and more fun to spot than the ones where the spacing has been changed to make it too blindingly obvious to be any fun to work out for ourselves.

Tigger.

but spacing and font are ok..
i parked in pub carpark nxt to bicester village where apnr van was doing his duty, knocked on side of van and politly asked mr plod to come look at my plate, apart from some leg pulling and sir needs his eyes testing etc etc he said no way would i get a pull for that unless their were other factors....he did not need to spell it out....

I wish they'd focus more on untaxed and uninsured drivers that cost the rest of us a fortune - ok, the plates are not legal, mostly look chav but don't really cause any harm as such.

Yes but the plates not being being or wierd can be checked with national databases to show tax and insurance etc

Normally 1 will check the plate whilst the other one can check the details

I agree that perhaps dodgy fonts ought to be stopped, but I think they need better number plate recognition software, as I can't see how the way the plate is spaced is in any way important. You ought to be able to space the plate how you want, as long as the font is legal and the numbers and letters are in the correct order!

If its the case that the plate recognition software can't handle the plate if its spaced differently then what happens with plates on imported cars! as these plates are legally allowed to be smaller.
