Can anyone explain the differences in the cooper model names that are part of the VIN number (4th to 7th character on VIN)?

What is the difference between these three: MF31 MF33 MF71?

MF31 = R56 MINI Cooper (LHD)
MF32 = R56 MINI Cooper (RHD)
MF33 = R56 MINI Cooper (USA)
MF71 = R56 MINI Cooper S (LHD)
MF72 = R56 MINI Cooper S (RHD)
MF73 = R56 MINI Cooper S (USA)

Wow! you guys are amazing... sorry to have not seen this in the FAQ..

What do these codes mean ? LHD RHD USA mean? I'm guessing that it's Left hand, Right hand, and USA.. but what are the differences between the RHD and the USA models?

Also, why does a USA VIN which has MF33 embedded in the VIN comes up as MF31 in the VIN decoder website which is in that FAQ (I'm new to the forum so can't post the URL)

Your guess is right on

USA is LHD

The 10th digit of the VIN for USA indicates model year but this digit is "0" in LHD and RHD VINs.

Are you running your VIN on the BMW Decoder site or RealOEM?

you are right, USA would be LHD.. but what are the technical differences between these two models? are they the same technically?

I'm testing using the BMW decoder. Here are the last 7 digits.. "TT59669", on the realoem.com it doesn't even find it, nor does it have 2007 or 2008 cars.

Appreciate any help.

The technical differences would be related to EPA and DOT regulations.

Once RealOEM gets updated for the R55 (Clubman) your VIN should work.

I have no idea why the Decoder is showing your MINI as built for the European (ECE) market. You might want to call MINIUSA (1-866-275-6464) and ask.
