Oh yes, I understand that, but to get a mini one for instance to anything above 70 isn't the easiest of tasks. Yes they'll do it, but with a cooper S, you can get in serious trouble. Lower power cars are less of a risk than high powered ones. People don't have the ability to handle a lot of power straight away - it comes with time and people aren't mature enough - 17/18yr olds think they are invincible. Limiting the power limits the damage that they can do. Still, it would make incidents like this less likely.

Most cars have 100bhp or thereabouts. What do you suggest to stop accidents like this? Croatia (I think its Croatia) etc do this, and it works.

Not true

People thought that I would drive like a maniac as I used to race when I was younger, but I drive well within the limits on the roads. I know the dangers - The fact of the matter is there are other road users, and other innocent parties on the road, and I'm not going to risk mine, and more importantly their lives because I want to thrash around. I'm all for a spirited drive when I know it's 100% safe on an open and quiet road. Why risk other parties on the road

I was just generalising. I'm sure that like me you aren't an idiot - there are sooo many though - thats why car insurance is so expensive. Don't worry - I understand most with minis as their first car tend to be safer as they wouldn't want to write off / crash such a nice car. Sorry if I offended you - I was merely reffering to the idiot who crashed his s at 95mph at 17 yrs old.

I've said this before...

...old people who think they are the perfect drivers are often worse than new drivers as they don't realise they driving like idiots Lost count of the number of old people who have cut across me on roundabouts near where I live. One a week on average because they take "the racing line" Last old person nearly crashed when I beeped my horn

I actually have a Fiesta MINI soon though...

Their insurance deserves to rocket through the roof after an accident like that, especially at that speed - And in those conditions Asking for trouble.

Tell me about it, but the thing is we all have to pay the extra at first because of these mindless t***s, even though he may regret it, he must have realised that what he was doing was quite simply dangerous, and Im sure his insurance will rocket. Still, it's no consolation to new drivers like us who have to pay ridiculous amounts to insure their cars! I hate these people. Why can't they prove a point by being safe?

I have a Mini one myself and it is my first car.

Alot of people when they pass think they are invincible it is true, but all it takes is one thing to scare them stupid when driving and normally they will wise up.
I hate that all young drivers are given a bad name because of some idiots.

It is all about knowing your own limits. I am open to a spirited drive of course but only on empty roads occasionally, damn petrol prices arent allowing for it much anymore.

I learned to drive in a 2.5l BMW in between lessons etc before the mini was purchased so maybe that is why i was wiser on the road

I want a cooper s soon though

I know, and its their attitude thats at fault. Things like ive been driving for 30 yrs, i don't need to concentrate on the road - I can do my makeup, shave, read a map etc... Its disgusting when you see some of the things that they get stopped for!

I'd love a cooper s - especially a checkmate, but I'm not sure I'll be able to afford the insurance for a long time. Still, I can hope!

How much is your insurance? It must be literally thousands! At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how much power you have - 50bhp or 500, a car is still a lethal weapon. Its not the quantity of power, its how safely you use it.

Still, we young drivers always get persecuted with high insurance prices and get frowned upon for having anything with an engine bigger than that of a smart car!

The insurance was just over a thousand which wasn't to bad.
Excatly right there but why can't others see that

I know it's so true- a few of my teachers at college have made some remarks
But then I questioned why I shouldn't have one and they didn't really know how to react

My teachers just say nice car - you're lucky aren't you! When I explain the advantages (£0 maintenance and low depreciation) they soon understand. Still, as you say, why shouldn't we drive Minis?
