Why No Anti-Theft Light?

Of all the new cars coming to market I would say 80% of them would have a little flashing led for anti theft purposes.. whether or not you had an alarm?

Why is there no such thing on the mini!!?? there is plenty of room for one?

Adam

Yeah, that annoyed me too.

If you don't have auto aircon there is a perfect place for it right in the middle of the dash near the screen.

I fitted one myself, looks like OEM fitment

You can get them from most auto spares shops, if you get a change over relay you can wire it up to come on when the ignition is off and go off when you turn the ignition on

Otherwise, try this:

the MINI has gone...

Dont bother with a relay
just buy an led or flashing led, wire the pos lead to a permanent live and the neg to an ignition supply and it will come on when you turn the iggnition off.

Only problem with those little flashing lights are most theives know they are sold in auto-parts stores and are fake also ... maybe that is why MINI didn't bother with one.

Agreed GMINI, in fact I'd be interested to know if anyone's done any research on auto theft and how alarms actually affect the likelihood of a car being stolen.

Most professional car thieves can bypass even the most expensive alarms in a matter of seconds. I guess some of the small time smash-and-grab types might be deterred by an alarm, but they wouldn't have the know-how/equipment to actually steal a MINI anyway.

I had an alarm installed by the dealer and they put an LED in one of my empty toggle switch bays.

Is this pic too small? It's the third one from the right. It blinks red when the alarm is enabled.

There is a flashing LED on the MINI's factory installed alarm - it's on the tip of the wiper stalk (mimicking a feature on early classic Minis where the turn signal indicator flashing light was on the tip of the turn signal lever).

While this alarm was not avalable in the US on 2002 models, it was available on MINIs sold in other markets such as the UK.

I'm sure someone will be posting a picture of it soon...... (hint, hint)

I just picked up my mini tonight...its a 2002, August build with Alarm and it has the little red blinking light on the dash in front of the air vent and its got the red cone light on the end of the washer stick. I'll have to work on the pictures if you really want them. I think it has some more red leds blinking in there...I'm going to go check right now... (boy that sounds cool) hehehe

Ok, I've decided:
My Car Aimee: Mini "S", Pure Silver/B, Premium (A/C and sun roof), DSC, Fog, and Heated seats. (Why? 'cause I can't wait a year)

Congratulations on getting your MINI!

So, the LED on the wiper stalk was available on late 2002 builds for the US market? Cool.

I think you might be mistaken about the "the little red blinking light on the dash in front of the air vent". If you have climate control there is an infared sensor to measure sunlight sitting there that looks just an LED, but it isn't. (The infared sensor helps the climate control maintain the MINI's interior temperature by determining when sunlight is pouring through the windshield.)

Anyway, here's a picture of the LED on the wiper stalk (from the gallery of Ches ) :

I also have the factory ibstalled alarm on my August build S and have the light pictured on the above post. Pretty neat, very visible and very noticeably not a fake led for thieves. I like it! Oh best of all, the factory installed alarm was only a $450.00 option while other people have ben quotes upwards of $1,300.00 by the dealers for aftermarket installs.

Getting back to the subject (for a sec ), I agree that any vehicle fitted with a self arming immobiliser should have an LED to highlight the fact. Nearly all japanese cars have this, even on their very low end models.

For those that havn't ordered their MINI yet, the factory alarm is well worth getting ($570AU) and for RHD drive vehicles the flashing LED is facing the window so potential thieves can see it more easily.

(Bruce, wouldn't it have been great to have had a little green blinker (like the Alarm LED) on the indicator stalk. Now that would have been very cool )

Desirable as the MINI is, I think that the level of theft will be relatively low. Why steal a £12,000/$20,000 MINI when you can just as easily get a £40,000/$60,000 Mercedes with no deadlocks?

It seems that vandalism seems to be more common.

Actually, that was supposed to happen - green on the turn signal stalk and red on the wiper stalk. Prototype MINIs where equipped this way.

Check out this news article where our very own Paul Mullett arranged for questions from MINI2 members to be answered by none other than Frank Stephenson, the MINI's designer.

http://www.mini2.com/news/news.php?id=33

Have a look at the last question that I got to ask Frank about the lights on the turn signal indicator stalk.
