Question Do decals affect warranty if not fitted by a Mini dealer?

I haven't even picked up my car yet but i was just wondering if having decals fitted affects the warranty. It's a Mini Cherished car, so comes with a 12 month warranty. I'd really like to get some kind of roof decal but they seem a tad expensive at the Mini dealer! I'm thinking that if i take the car elsewhere, it may invalidate the warranty, or at least part of it...

What's your take on this?

I shouldn't think it will invalidate the warranty, maybe only on paintwork!!

I dont think so....its just the decal wont be covered by them

My Dooper's roof decal was fitted at the dealership before I collected it, it was done by Phil @ MINI PIRATE.com || 2007 || Mini Decals & Graphics and they didnt mind at all, in fact they have had custom decals fitted to their demo cars before (non-mini)

Thanks for your replies.. I was looking at the mini pirate website earlier. I'm not sure if i'll get a roof decal but i'm not normally one for the understated approach! I like the idea of the zipper to be honest and i reckon it will work well on the black roof.

Mini Pirate always does a superb job - he has his own area within the sponsors forums, where there is feedback and examples of his work. Go for it

I have the zipper decal (£115 from MINI, but that doesn't inc fitting it)

I sent Phil @ MINIPirate some pictures of my decal so he could work on a similar design, so it would definatley be worth getting in touch with him. He has an excellent rep on here too.

The Zip decal is also very rare, I am still yet to see one in person on another MINI, I've only ever seen other peoples pictures on here.

A few pics of the decal.....

Regards,

James.

Phil, That looks brilliant. I was considering a union jack so that would be the best of both worlds!

James, i've never seen a zipper decal in the flesh which is part of the appeal to be honest.

I can't wait to get my hands on the car now... just have to save up and raid the penny jar

On a slightly different note decals aren't covered by the Mini Cherished warranty (classed as trim), as I found out when the stickers on my Aero kit started peeling.

MINI dealer Accessories (which include dealer fitted graphics/decals) will only have 1 year warranty.

i'm not too worried about the decal not being covered but didn't want to void the rest of my warranty by adding my own touches

One of the main problems effecting paintwork with fitting graphics / decals /stripes either by yourself or by the not-so-professional fitters (just to make it perfectly clear "Phil aka The Pirate" is not one of these ), is when they come to trim or cut the vinyl / graphic / decals on the car (with a scalpel) and cut into the actual paint which can cause corrosion issues in the future and also marks should you wish to change or remove the graphics in the future, now that could cause warranty issues if you didn't get the Main Dealer to fit the graphics originally .

this is very true Randall.

There have been a few times when we have been to fit new graphics but remove old ones beforehand and find that the person who fitted the original ones had just laid vinyl onto the car and then cut - and into the paint work. NOT GOOD PRACTICE !!!

We offer a very professional service and any cutting/trimming back is done so with the utmost care and attention as 9 times out of 10 my customer is standing beside me watching - so no pressure there then

We treat every customers car as it was our own.

Phil

I wasn't suggesting otherwise and the better graphic fitters won't mind if the customer watches, the only problem with that is, it looks very easy to do when it's done professionally, but a different matter when trying to do it yourself and unless you want to learn by your mistakes ie, a few goes / graphics, leave it to the professionals , unless you want to learn.

I was just pointing out something that I hadn't seen pointed out that I thought was a good point to make and relevant to this tread as I've seen it done many times (not by me I might add), and the marks & corrosion caused .

That isn't always good though as someone who doesn't know what they're doing will also do this (some people aren't as fussy as others or respect other peoples property), there are some people who are very good & know that they're good and have plenty of very happy customers as you do, but there are also those who think that they are very good but are in-fact no good at all , but this is as with everything else in life.

This comment by a professional & quality graphics man just goes to show that that my original post #14 had a valid point to make.

Youv've never done any graphics for me Phil, but I'll be contacting you should I ever need any doing, and I'm very fussy! .

Thanks Randall - and I was backing your points up - but I can only speak for myself.

there are a lot of dodgy graphics companies and fitters out there who think they can do a good job but speaking for my own brand and company we see customers MINI's or whatever it may be (yes we do other marques too) as our own so therefore if a jobs worth doing, you do it right

But I was trying to emphasis how we treat or approach our work.

Hope to speak to you soon then and we don't mind fussy believe me

Thanks! Phil, I understood all of the above.

I can also can only speak for myself and although I said you have never done any work for me (how do I know how good you are) I've come across some of your work (through MINIs) ie, asked who's MINI it was "who's done that" as I've liked what's been done (quality of graphics & workmanship) and kept it in mind for the future, either for myself or to point others in the right direction, with that comment in mind I also ask who's done that when I see poor work (quality of graphics & workmanship) whether the person who's car it is is happy with it or not, so I know to steer clear, although I'm not a graphics man myself I know a good job when I see one.

Your reputation on MINI2 also speaks for itself.

I was trying to make it clear to future readers, that I was in no way saying that you were anything but professional! (as I could've had a fight on my hands ). "andrewcregan's" very quick response made me think that I put it across otherwise (I feel I'm diging myself into a deeper and deeper hole so I'm just going to shut up! ), hovever I think my additional comments / points also confused the issue .

so, what you're trying to say is that Phil is a cowboy, right?

I'm only kidding. From what i've read, Phil is the man for the job and i wouldn't be surprised if the workmanship is better than that of a dealer. I'll definitely be in touch if and when i want decals.. I'm very tempted by the zipper with the union jack though
