Why a jack?

On the spec list of my Cooper is a car jack. What's the point of that? It's got no spare wheel (or has it?).

And why do they go to the trouble of mentioning such a pointless standard option?

You may need to remove, change, clean, or repair your wheel or tyre, or work on your brakes etc.

You're not seriously upset about a freebie?!

Some of the earlier MINIs didn't have a jack kit etc... etc... (you're lucky you have one) it was an option until later on (I think), as "Paul" states you still need to get your wheel off sometime, even if you have the run-flats with the repair system, you're supposed to put the sealer in & then spin the wheel around before blowing it back up to ensure the sealer seals .

If you have got a spare you will see it if you look under the rear, if not you'll see a black plastic panel (the spare wheel was also an option ).

So you can have a spare then? I hadn't realised that. I just assumed there wasn't space and that's why they fitted the run flats instead.

Would have much rather have normal tyres and a spare wheel.

Yes you can (Not Ss though, 1st Gen) and they were normally only selected by people with MINIs without run-flats (15in wheels) and then the option was rarely selected so there are few about .

If you do get a puncture and you do manage to get your wheel off you're still going to have to get someone to give you a lift or call a taxi to get the puncture fixed , (If you don't have a repair system or spare wheel ).

You could add a spare wheel and a bracket to your MINI (good luck! if you try to find a used one ).

A couple of points to remember if you get a puncture.

You can drive on a run-flat when deflated but once you have the tyre is classed as damaged & replacement is advised (Manufacturer & Main Dealers etc... etc..., most tyre fitters won't repair run-flats) and those run-flats are expensive £££££.

If you put the sealer system in the tyre, tyre fitters don't like this either and sometimes want to replace your tyre run-flat or not.

There is plenty of info on the above points (discussed plenty of times) if you search (if you haven't already) , you'll need your reading goggles though .

If you didnt have a jack you would have to find something else to beat people to death with in a road rage type stylee.

Slightly off topic but the manufacturers don't include the spare wheel as standard as it helps to bring the overall vehicle weight down. This is important to them as a 10kg reduction in mass can bring the car down by one "inertia band" which means slightly easier emissions testing. As options don't count toward the basic weight it can be offered as an option and not carry and emissions penalty

And tyre fitters don't like the sealer stuff because it creates one hell of a mess to the tyre, wheel, the tyre fitting equipment and themselves.

And I should know.
