China and US are doing very little to help the problem compared to the size of us.

I think it does work. If you encourage people to move to new low CO2 cars, the older cars move out of the market. Yes, someone bought your car, but what about the probably older and more polluting car which your purchaser sold? Good chance it was scrapped.

By pushing more C02 friendly cars into the top of the supply chain, the bottom drops out and overall effect is a decrease in the C02 levels.

Just bought an R53 S... Doh! But, I'm going to enjoy it to the full and screw Mr. Darling!

In fact I'll consider getting a 210 conversion to pump out more CO2 just to get my £300s worth!!!!

Why not just subsidise all us R53 S owners the difference in a straight part x for a less polluting R56 S? Everyone wins and the government goes up in our estimations lol!

I think it's a good thing. We need something to encourage car manufacturers and consumers to move to lower emission cars.

Also, just sold 2002 MCS and got a Clubman Cooper S, means my road tax goes from £210 to £35

that's just not fair! And there was me, buying a mini to save money!

It's actually better for the environment for me to keep my R53 MCS and NOT sell it and buy a new MCD.... so why has my tax not been lowered?

This was certainly an interesting budget.

I think that it is a fair system for new car buyers. You have a choice in what you buy, and manufacturers could easily do so much more to be environmentally friendly. I noted that the BBC said a new Ford Focus would cost £425 in its first year. Well Ford should do more then to be cleaner. BMW/MINI have managed, under the new system you could drive a BMW 335 twin-turbo diesel (0-62mph in 6.2secs) and in the first year it would cost £300 in the first year and then £210 in 2010/2011. All manufacturers could match this and therefore a big powerful car doesn't have to be expensive to tax.

I don't think it is a particularly fair system for owners of cars already. £300 sounds like a lot for the R53 MCS given the tax rate is based on CO2 alone. Car emissions only form a small part of our total emissions, manufacturing and disposal of cars is just as important. The new R56 Cooper S will only be £125 though.

So, my council tax has gone up, as has my bread, eggs, petrol, heating, electricity, air-fare tax, and income tax... has my wage? No...

Is the level of service we're getting increased? No. This frigging green tax this, low emissions this - are they actually putting the money generated into actually stopping/helping climate change? No...

How us Brits actually bend over, part our arse-cheeks and take it right up the backside is beyond me. When I have a moan at work about the way that we are bled for every penny, people think I'm some kind of raging activist, but the level of apathy in this nation is soul-destroying...

Wouldnt mind but from what I can remember the polution from this country...(yes that v small one on the global map) we produce something like ..............00000000000000000001 of the harmful stuff out yet all the citizens that drive the cars here get hit in the wallet...ok we all need to do our share towards the environment...but just like the fool of London sorry the mayor...its all simply to raise money for other silly projects but making themselves look like there doing something good to keep the environmentalists off there back....what next cuddle a baby to show just what a kind normal human you are Mr's Darling, Brown and Divingstone...ahh think I might go for a drive and stick in loads of BP ultimate...then the climate will rise and I can be happy and get a suntan in this country its one of the few things left I can do.

You would not QUITE mind so much, if the billions stolen from motorists, were spent on improving the roads - parking - etc, but NO! it's really another stealth tax, going into general funds to give to foreigners......
