Which month does this higher rate tax come in on?

Would it be worth cashing in the current tax disc and buying a full year (at the old rate) just before the increase is imposed?

Tigger.

By looking at that auto trader site i am on band D so it will go up £5 this year, from 2009 does it then drop for my car to £90? or is that only for brand new cars? if it does drop why is it now £140 soon tobe £145?

Very odd

I can drive the GP, which according to stats spits out 207gm of whatever it is flat out everywhere and do 12 mpg, or I can take it steady and get well in excess of 34 mpg, now is my Co2 still 207gm if I drive it like its stolen or if I drive like it your granny

It just does not add up

You're absolutely right. Taxation based on CO2 rates does not take into account a variety of factors. But I suppose if you drive harder you'll pay more through fuel. Diesels which have lower CO2 rates pollute the atmosphere with other gases 'that are not spoken about'.

But in 2010-2011, what is this £550 1st year rate? Then £310 after that.

Am i right in thinking that the new A to M tax band rates announced today , only apply to newly registered cars, and that cars already on the road are still taxed by the old A to G tax band system . I didn't think that new road tax systems could be back dated to cover older cars . As they haven't in the past .

The revised tax bills for 2008-9

Tax Band CO2 Emissions (g/km) 2007-08 rate 2008-09 rate
A 0-100 0 0
B 101-120 35 35
C 121-150 115 120
D 151-165 140 145
E 166-185 165 170
F 186+ (cars registered before 23/3/08) 205 210
G 226+ (cars registered after 23/3/08 300 400

The new tax system 2009-10 and 2010-11

Tax Band CO2 Emissions (g/km) 2009-10 standard rate 2010-11 first year rate 2010-11 standard rate
A 0-100 0 0 0
B 101-110 20 0 20
C 111-120 30 0 35
D 121-130 90 0 95
E 131-140 110 115 115
F 141-150 120 125 125
G 151-160 150 155 155
H 161-170 175 250 180
I 171-180 205 300 210
J 181-200 260 425 270
K 201-225 300 550 310
L 226-255 415 750 430
M 225+ 440 950 455

I guess it is unfair for those who need a cheap 4x4 for genuine country use. There is no reason for family car to be rated at £550 in the first year. Even a 330i M Sport Coupe (272 hp) would be at the £300 first year / £210 thereafter rate.

I don't think this is a bad deal for new cars, just owners of nearly-new cars.

I think it's a good thing. We need something to encourage car manufacturers and consumers to move to lower emission cars.

Also, just sold 2002 MCS and got a Clubman Cooper S, means my road tax goes from £210 to £35

Dont know where you got that info from cause I just checked mine 150 C02 = band C = £120 up from £115 for Clubman Cooper S

Band
CO2 emission (g/km)
12 months rate
6 months rate

A
Up to 100

B

The idea is that a higher purchase price for less green vehicles due to the higher 1st year tax will put people off, but whats £200 when you are buying something for £20k+ on a 3 year PCP deal?

I'd say a flat rate of £200 for road fund licence across the board for anything under 2 litres, £300 for 3 litres, £400 for 4 litres and so on. Then stick 0.50 pence on fuel per litre but make that after the VAT has been charged on a standard price.

That would encourage efficient smaller engines and a lighter right foot for the drivers most of the time, but still allow some sporty driving when you feel flush

Not sure whether to get a late R53 MCS or an early R56 MCS - think i might go for the R56 now!!

At least he delayed the fuel duty rise till later in the year...

You do have a choice, We all have a choice, it's called the ballot box, there is also civil disobedience, protest and a hundred other ways to change things.
At the end of the day, the government is elected to do our bidding, if they don' t measure up then all we have to do is tell them en masse. A quiet but orderly revolution. I feel a Number 10 petition coming on to start with......
