Offline | I do less than 4,500 miles a year and I've to pay £300 - brilliant. What's wrong with charging on a milage basis - <5k - £100 <10k - £200 etc etc Surely encouraging people to do less miles reduces results in the same/better environmental benefits. But I suppose that'll mean they can make anymore money from us. I'm sure the people of Scotland would encourage the parliment to take on our own road taxing stategy if it was fairer! |

![]() Man about the house | Indeed. Look, anyone driving a Cooper S more than 3200 miles per year will still be paying more in tax through fuel duty (and VAT) than they will do in VED next year. I do 15K a year in my Cooper D and will pay about £710 in fuel duty and with £20 VED, that makes £730 tax. That's equivalent to an S driver doing 4400 miles per year and although I will have emitted 60% more CO2 than the S driver (1.5 vs 2.5 tonnes), I will have done 3.5 times as many miles. Incidentally, 15K in an R53 S would cost you about £1,400 in fuel tax and emit 5 tonnes of CO2 (assuming a sedate 30mpg). If you think this is unfair, you wait until Road Charging comes in. They say it's been buried, but I'll bet within 10 years it'll be a reality. D-lite-full |

Offline | I thought Road tax paid for the maintenance and upkeep of roads so if a dooper is doing 3.5 times more miles on the road why should I pay more in tax if i do around 8000 miles per year and have to pay nearly 3 times more in road tax than a dooper doing 15k? I put in V power and Bp ultimate fuel which further reduces my emissions, do I then get the chance to pay less tax?? Do I jack, these fuels are taxed and they are the cleaner fuels!! |

![]() Man about the house | VED hasn't been specifically for road maintenance since it's stopped being called Road Tax. It's a 'Green' tax based on vehicle ownership that all goes into a big pot along with fuel duty and probably most other taxes, to be distributed however the treasury sees fit. It wasn't so long ago when 'Road Tax' bands where based on the type of vehicle - motorcycles, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles etc (reliant robins were actually classed as motorcycles and my dad did try to convince me to buy one ). Then it became linked to engine capacity, and now it's based on CO2 emissions.Come the time when most cars are below the 120g/km threshold, the goalposts will either move down, or it'll be based on other emissions as well as CO2. If you used V power or BP Ultimate, which increase fuel economy, you'll pay less tax through fuel duty because you won't be filling up so often, though with the prices of these premium fuels, I'm not sure how worthwhile it is. BTW, you'll be paying 15 times more VED than me next year. ![]() D-lite-full |

Offline | Have you seen in the Sun a Micra is going to cost more to tax than a Hummer? Getting charged more for a small car, yet the government wants people to drive small cars |

![]() 6X therapist | If the take from 'road tax' was ploughed back into road infrastructure and transportation in general we would have the best transport system in the world. Look at your council tax bill, it says road upkeep and maintenance on there too, so where is all this money from tax discs going ? |

Offline | Sadly its true... if you have a hummer thats pre 2001 you are laughing your head off!! *******s!! How do I get my MINI retested? Mine does 400miles to a tank max and 42mpg on the motorway? I have to say tuning really has increased economy from stock. Goonery.... what kills me is if they put the fuel tax increase and this extra 2p into the road they'd have 2.5billion! Thats gotta lay a ton of roads!! Even if it is £10000 per square metre ![]() |

![]() Man about the house | They'll laughing as long as they don't look at the 15mpg the Hummer returns. You can't get retested as far as I know. The tax bands are based on the figures published by the manufacturers. To be honest, I'd say published figures are probably on the low side (i.e. better for you) much in the same way as mpg figures tend to be better on paper than they are in the real world. You might find you tax increases if you went for a retest! D-lite-full |
