Exclamation

Hello. I am new to the MINI world. Have a few questions that I hope someone can assist with.

My wife and I are activly looking for a 2002-2005 Mini for a daily driver.

On Friday, we drove a 2003 HT that was loaded with almost everything. It has 98000 miles on it. Here are a few items that I would like guideance on. There is NO documentation, service records or even an owner's manual with the car. The car was purchased at an auction. The lot owner was NO help with info.

The car drove well and had plenty of power, the fluids were clean and topped off, had 2 different kinds of tires. and the following:

There was an indicator light on the dash that was lit. It looked like a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle with a clockwise arrow around it. Can anyone tell me what this light means?

There was also a "Sewing Machine" type of noise coming from the engine. I thought at first it was the A/C compressor but it was not. I have been told that a Mini requires a timing belt change at around 75-100K. Is this correct? Any idea on the cost?

The car was in fairly good shape with the exception of the following: Black windshield trim on Driver's side was broken. There are a few "dings' here and there. There is a crack in the rear ureathane bumper cover and a crack in the Pass side rear view mirror. I saw no leaks or no damage to indicate a major collision. The Carfax is clear. The paint and interior are dirty as well as the engine compartment. The car needs a GOOD Detailing.

I think the price may be OK at under 10K compared to what I have seen elsewhere in my area. My gut feeling is to hold out for a lower mileage car that has been cared for, even if it means paying more. We want a DEPENDABLE Mini that my wife can drive without any worries.

I am no stranger to domestic mechanical and autobody work but I do not have any experience with Mini's Thanks for any comments and suggestions that you may have. The closest Mini dealer to my area is 120 miles away. There is a BMW dealer closer.

If the warning light you saw was steady and I understand your description then I think it means the ASC+T/DSC is not on. Either because the driver switched it off after starting the engine or it is defective. The ASC+T/DSC defaults to be on so it is very likely defective. Big bucks to fix I imagine.

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

My advice to anyone would be to leave any MINI that appears to have been neglected or abused alone, but that's just my opinion. You don't mention what model it is. If it is a ONE/Cooper with a 5 Speed it will have the Midland gearbox in it which has been known to be problematic i.e. fail. I would hold out for something with all it's records, preferably lower mileage and post facelift. But more importantly in good order and well cared for.

Good Luck!
