| MINI2 Newbie | Cost per mile Now i wish i went for the diesel!! In the running for a new job at work, will be quite a bit of travelling involved, covering area from aberdeen to newcastle! so will get to spend lots of time in my mini! yay! Question being....they give 9p per mile travelling costs. Do you think this is reasonable? and could i run a mini (cooper 1.6) on that? (doesnt seem that much to me, and my baby so far has seemed quite expensive on fuel although not worked out mile to gallon) comments please! thanks |

Offline | Both 9p per mile and 35p are ridiculous if you supply the car in order to do the job. See: Running Cost Tables - The AA for petrol costs and: Running Cost Tables - The AA for diesel. David |

| Back To My Old Self | And I thought the 11.7p/mile we get was disgusting . At the moment based on 34 mpg and 102.9p a litre my R50 Cooper costs about 14-15p/mile to run. I keep an accurate spreadsheet for work/tax purposes. Try pushing for more. The one plus point is that the government says that you are entitled to earn 40p/mile for the first 10k, and 25p/mile thereafter, tax free. So you can get a tax rebate on the difference. So for example you will get a tax rebate on 40p-9p = 31pence. Tax rebate will be 31x22% = 6.82 p/mile (for the first 10k anyway). You will need to keep a record of all journeys you make for work. And don't forget that a commute from your usual place of residence to any workplace other than your permanent office is a business journey. ![]() |

| Back To My Old Self | Good point. I do get a car allowance to put towards buying/running the car of my choice. So my mileage rate is essentially purely for putting fuel in it, should also cover some wear and tear but doesn't at the moment. If you do not get a car allowance then your mileage rate should be far far higher, more like the tax free rates. Your car will tumble in value, trust me I know, and you should be compensated for it somehow. ![]() |

Offline | We keep accurate fleet costings on our vehicles and our 2004 Cooper has averaged a fuel cost of 11.2p per mile and vehicle cost of 13.7, giving a total cost of 24.9p per mile. This total includes an estimate for depreciation that is quite optimistic, so I'd say that the true cost, when we sell it, will be higher. Having said that, it's cheaper to run that a Ford Courier 50TD, the next best one. |

| MINI2 Newbie | Well having been a bit more informed about new job (i.e speaking to my, hopefully, new boss instead of taking my currents boss's word for it) it appears that i get 40p a mile!!! Which is an awful lot better and realistic i think. Job is pretty good, very different to what i do now, but would mean putting an awful lot of miles on my car (currently done 18k) but that would be good too, spending quality time everyday with my mini!! But would mean being away from home etc etc ... oh the dilema....better stop rambling as getting off topic, just feeling confused ![]() ![]() |

| Back To My Old Self | Most insurers throw it in free these days. Is the rate 40p flat rate no matter how many miles you do? Or does it drop after say 10k like the tax free allowance. It's just that if it's flat rate you could end up being taxed on it after 10k miles. Some links to the IR pages Employees using own vehicles for work: statutory mileage rates 2002/03 onwards: kinds of vehicle Employees using own vehicles for work: use of the approved amount: chargeable amount and relief available Employees using own vehicles for work: examples: mileage allowance payments at pence per mile rate ![]() |

Offline | I have just renewed my insurance (with e-sure, having previously been with Tesco for many years). Adding business use to the policy cost me nothing extra, I was told that is the case for all of their policys, not just for my circumstances. S. |
