Offline | Hi all, sitting here bored in hospital, due to a car crash which happened on Monday eve... I was on the way to the garage to pick up my mini, which was getting some things done in warrenty, country roads, wet, muddy, the curtusy car i was given a ford ka didnt cope and lost it on a corner, i wasnt speeding, ended up on wrong side of rd with a on-comming car, which i avoided but the ka spun and i ended up sideways into a tree, luckily no passengers, just me. ka smashed, andme? well punctured lung which is still closely monitored as its not healing yet, 3 cracked ribs, broken shoulder and bruising, mostly internal injurys airbad in ka didnt go off, i know that if i had crashed the mini i would be at home now,ok but depressed, not sure which is worse, im glad my mini is safe, but it looks like i will be stuck in hospital for a good week, most likely more, at least im alive! what a nitemare, will never get in or buy a car that isnt 5 star safety rated ever again. well bac 2 crap telly at extorinate cost, jeez this patientline keyboard is hardwork, owww at least the pain killers help most of the time, and i will get some time off work, please drive safely. |

| Not the best | OUCH!!! I remember when I broke a couple of ribs when racing, jeez it hurt!! I sat in a Ka once, and I was totally put off because of how thin the doors were if I had the misfortune to stuff it sideways! I totally agree that after an accident, you see safety on the road differently - After some huge racing shunts in the past, safety is very important for me. In the words of Lee Evans, 'if someone says get well soon to you, they mean one thing - they want you to suffer!' So on that, I wish you to get well now!!! Take care, Ollie ![]() |

Offline | Sorry to hear the bad news Hope you get better quick!I've seen a KA crash at 20mph and it was detroyed. That was only hitting the back of a Clio! Daves advice.... dont ever drive one and avoid being a passenger. They are just tin cans but just not as tough as one. |

| Perfectionist Cooper S | Hi Sorry to hear you news - Get well Soon I have had two Ka's & had no problems with both of them but that was only really town driving & know gone to my mini Cooper S & the differnce in all respects are safer & better to drive I must admit its nice to drive the mini in all weathers & that reassuring thought that you have 17inch tyres to grip rather than 16 on the Ka's I think there ok a a first car to gain some experince but i certainly wouldn't go back & somethimes think how i ever drove them Anyway get well soon & think that you pride & joy is still safe & that they can get another Ka but not another you!!! Take Care |

![]() Extra 3 Inches | Looks like the first thing you'll need to do when you recover is buy a new car then, as your 1st Gen Cooper only has a 4 Star Rating. |

Offline | lol, yeh after some reading i noticed my 53 plate cooper is 4 star rated, guess it will have to do until ive paid off my loan and can afford a newer model, i will be a much safer driver in poor weather conditions in the future anyway, ive learned a valuable lesson.... ive been driving 20 years, but its never 2 late to learn! at least the mini has side air bags, they would have helped in this occasion thanks for all your support people its much appreciated, im still stuck in hospital, the drain connected to my lung is now connected to suction, and depending on it sucess i may be operated on in a few days to patch up my lung. |

Offline | very sorry to hear about your accident, hope you fully recover and get behind the wheel of your mini soon. also very concerned re the comments about safety of the Ford Ka as my daughter has been driving one for over two years !! the Ka has been in production for over ten years and surely if there was a problem it would have been highlighted before now ? |

Offline | im unsure of the insurance situation, i assumed that i was covered by the garage since they lent me the car, my dad has spoken to the garage they didnt seem bothered about the ka, they were more concerned about me, and said they wearnt sure about the insurance either as they hadnt been in this situation before and would have 2 check! but i dnt know, i will sort it out when im out. on the scale of things a minor issue |

![]() Extra 3 Inches | The only 'problem' with the Ka is that it's a 13 year-old design and the majority have no side airbags. It achieved a three star NCAP rating, which was extremely good at the time but is now considered poor when compared with newer models. 5meodmt is correct in saying that his injuries may not have been as bad had he been driving a MINI (or for that matter any other newer car with more airbags and a higher NCAP rating) but that doesn't mean the Ka is unsafe. Wet, muddy roads can be dangerous in any car, and front airbags are designed not to go off in a side impact, so again the fact that the accident happened does not mean the Ka is unsafe. I sold hundreds of Ka from 1997-2005 and can count on the fingers of one hand the number I've seen involved in an accident that resulted in serious injury to the occupants. |
