Having trouble selling my car

I have a new cooper arriving next week but I'm having real trouble selling my current one. It's been up for sale just over a week and not had a single genuine phone call. Is it the wrong time to be selling a car? what with every bill under the sun going up and up. We thought we priced it just right and judging by the prices on auto trader it's very good price for an 04 plate. We've put it on auto trader online but didn't bother with the magazine, that a mistake?

Any advice appreciated! Really need to sell it soon.

I must say I understand your plight, I had mine in Autotrader and eBay but didn't have any bites at all. I ended up having to trade my old one in for my new MINI. It's a tough time out there. Good luck with the sale

Just had a quick look at Autotrader and seen a number of 04 plate Coopers around the £8k mark. Yes they've got slightly more miles on, but lets face it, there's not really alot of difference between 22k miles and 40k miles... It's probably the combination of time of the year and being over priced. Alot of people make the mistake of overpricing...unfortunately it's a buyers market at the moment.
1 example:
Autotrader - MINI Cooper 1.6

ALTHOUGH SHE NEEDS A BIT OF GUIDANCE, LESLEY WILL BE MY BIATCH FOR NOW...!

At £8195 (25k) the dealer is also legally offering some kind of warranty unlike the private seller at £8500 (22k) who provides no guarantee for the should be a cheaper price.
Ties in with the Parkers valuation (40K) at approx. £7500 private good, £7950-8180 for the dealers. It will sell as soon as the price is right.....market forces will always decide in the end even with low MINI depreciation.

It's such a difficult decision to make - whether to trade-in or to sell privately and hope to get more. Have you at least got a trade-in value by the dealer?

I recently traded in a 54-plate Cooper with Chili pack, MFSW, alarm etc with 60k miles. Personally I thought I got a good trade-in value as the dealer had to put a MOT on the car, replace the exhaust and brakes, tax the vehicle and slap on a 1 year warranty, and sold the car for less than £1k more than what I got from them. This proves you can get an okay trade value.

If you have the time it probably is worth selling privately but be aware if you still have the car after you take delivery of the new one, you'll be paying insurance and tax etc which eats into your potential savings.

Good luck.

Parkers 2004 Cooper

The car your comparing it against is hardly a popular colour for residual value which knocks off hundreds of pounds instantly. Also got tiny wheels.

If you look at coopers just under 8500

Buy a used MINI COOPER Car - Auto Trader UK

nearly all of them are 2003 so I think it's unfair to say mine is over priced. I may drop it to £8250 tomorrow but I'm not hopeful of getting any calls.

Also, those parkers prices don't seem very realistic

It always comes down to price if you ask me. There's over a million MINIs been sold now at the end of the day. They're not rare cars and if yours is at all overpriced it will show in the response to your adverts.

Try dropping the price to just below 8k if you can as the way autotrader search works, it could make a difference... i.e. - if someone has a maximum of £8k and that's all they've searched for, they probably wouldn't go up to £9k on the search and think of knocking you down to a price they want to pay.

Hope that made sense... it's late!

I sold my car 2 weeks ago. The stealer offered me 8.8k for my VW Beetle 2.0 conv in mint condition with only 18 genuine miles and fsh and BUG plate. I looked on autotrader and most were 10k and above so I popped it on at that. Not one call. I thought well, if im going to accept the dealers part ex, I would rather it went to somebody who wouldnt then put the price on. I dropped it online to 9.5k and you would not believe the phone calls that a 500 pound drop made! It was INCREDIBLE. Sold the next morning and I had 12 more calls that day. Money is the ONLY thing people are really interested in, so if you have to sell, pitch it above what you would be offered from part ex, but not too much over. It will sell then and good luck I also only advertised on the web, who buys the mag anymore lol

To those that are saying it's over priced. Here's what dealers offered us trade in

Vauxhall dealer £8750 against a brand new tigra
Hull mini £7700

Unfortunately the dealer where we ordered the car offered a few hundred less than Hull but we didn't think this was an issue as we didn't think we'd have any trouble selling it private. So if I lower it below 8k as suggested, you can see just how that compares with what we've been offered already and glasses guide prices.

I'll lower the price a bit. If no joy then I'm going to have to take it round the dealers to say what they'd offer cash. First call Vauxhall dealer.

I see what you mean by colour, but thats personal preference...HOWEVER it's the face lift model on a 54 plate...I know which one I'd go for....you can pick up a set of decent s spokes for next to nothing, and you've still got the others as spare or to sell...I would drop yours to £7995 no offers...yes it's a drop of £500 , but if anyones IS going to phone you about your car at your current price, they;d be loking to knock it down to £8k anyway. You need to get the buyers attention and get them looking at your car, then you're most of the way there, and £7995 would REALLY grab peoples attention. It all depends how quickly you want to sell at the end of the day!

That was the plan. To pitch it just below what everyone else was selling the same year, similar milage coopers for.

you will be fine dont worry. It will sell. I am guessing tho that the other dealers only offered you the part ex price if it was against one of their cars. Will be v interesting to see what they offer as just a cash deal. Keep us posted, and dont lose heart

bless you are a little green on this mate. Th reason for the difference on the tigra trade in is because the tigra has a lot of movemet in its price where as a new mini does not. simple. But hardly any dealers will be interested in a cash sale of a used mini. the market is flooded with em. Just persevere and be prepared to drop your price down.

Times are getting hard! running costs are rising, the average car is losing £2357 a year, and MINI owners have been blessed when it comes to resale values , being way above average values , there is no longer a shortage of cars available, and spec adds very little to the value compared with the new extra price -air con is probably the most looked for extra anything else can be added.
Many MINIS are now 6/7/8 years old , and starting to show this in repair costs, they are still overpriced in my view and must come down and I think they will and fast!
TLC servicing was on 98% of all MINIs and it ,s not all that comprehensive,a look at the faults/fixes shows that ,this will also impact values.
There are a lot of ex company cars ie estate agents ,also on the market, you will have to adjust your asking price ,bite the bullet and think of the Jaguar owner who lost £30 or £40000 in the same time you had your car
