Jess, just glad you and your dad are ok, everybody learns from every single mistake, and in future I know for sure you will look in your mirror, look again, and check behind! so its going to make you a better driver having this knock early on. Your mini will soon be as good as new, so put it behind you and get back out there as soon as you can

Shoot sorry to hear this Jess - Im the same age as you, and I have had a few near misses with other drivers and they have scared the living daylights out of me - Such as a Red Ford Ka who seemed to thing I didn't exist leaving some traffic lights

You can't let a little incident like this knock you down - When I used to race, I had a really nasty shunt (on my first weekend believe it or not ), and I was a mess (physically and mentally ). Anyway, I couldn't let it lie there - You have to rise above it and believe that you can do it, and do it well - So a van driver knocks your mirror off - He may be able to trash your mirror, but not your confidence

Take care, Ollie

Sorry to hear about that!!!!! Dont let this put you off driving though.

I failed my first driving test on something similar to this. I was at a t junction, came up, stopped looked around and there was noone there, i checked again no one there, even the examiner nodded, as soon as i went someone appeared from nowhere!! They had come flying off the roundabout in the outside lane.
I got failed because he "could have come into my lane."
Got the same guy second time and everything lol That was last July.

Was it just the wing mirror that was damaged??

EDIT: sorry just read back there and you mentioned what was damaged

So sorry to hear of your frightening experience Jess. Make sure your driving instructor knows that you are feeling nervous etc when you next have a lesson to help you settle back into driving.

Many previous posts have touched on the reality of driving and that few of us escape nudges/knocks/scrapes etc. It is so upsetting when it happens to you and leaves you feeling very vulnerable. I had a bad accident in 2004 and had to be cut out of my car. However, I went on to drive again and I always held onto the fact that I was not to blame and the drunken idiot who caused it received a lengthy ban.

I hope you get your special car fixed really soon. I also hope you regain your confidence very quickly. Having a qualified instructor by you when next out should help with this all being well.

Take care

Smile Hang in there

I'd just like to add my comments to the others suggesting you take a little step back from the disappointment you must be feeling and remember that everyone has scrapes in their driving history.

Even a certain L. Hamilton has scrapes in his car and he's about as talented a driver as there is !

I'm sure you can remember how good it felt like when you first got behind the wheel of your MINI and that feeling will soon come back.

Here in America kids cannot wait to get behind the wheel. I just wish more of them were alert and concerned drivers like you - but they aren't! If I were you I wouldn't give up on driving because one irresposible driver ruined your day and caused damage to your vehicle. Take it as a lesson that no matter how safe you think you are, a vehicle is stil a very deadly weapon...treat it with caution. I say, get back on that horse and keep riding...
