Can you customise too much ?

Hi all,

Only had my R50 Cooper for a few weeks, but done some minor changes including roof decal, john cooper sigs, and wheel nut covers. Inside I've put in a Harmon Karmon ipod interface.

However, loads more I want to do and I've seen some door numbers that look really good on someone elses Mini. But mentioned this to the wife and she reckons I've now made the car look
" chavvy " !!

Trouble is I now find myself looking at other Minis' and websites thinking, " I'd love to do that/fit this" etc.

Has anyone else come down with this illness,

Cheers
Rich

I think the wheel nut covers look a bit odd, but other than that you've gone nowhere near as mad as many people on here.

Not sure if that's a good thing or not mind you!

Hi Rich,

I'm with you on the wheel nut covers - they look pretty good. And no, your MINI doesn't look 'Chavy' in the slightest.

Do you know it they're available in silver alloy colour too?

All the best,
Andrew.

Think it looks great.
But rest assured modding can become a horrible, debilitating illness that can lead to loss of friends family etc.

Possibly the *worst *modified car ever! You need to see it!

I think they were avaliable in silver, iirc. I'll try and find out who they came from later, but i just did a search on ebay for white wheel nut covers, only cost a couple of quid for 20 .

Personally I didn't like the 'standard' black nuts 'cos they looked a bit dirty so took a punt on the covers just because they were cheap. Obviously not everyones cup of tea, but they look okay for now.

Cheers,
Rich

I have door numbers on mine, hopefully not too chavvy, but even if some poeple think they are, am I bothered?

Just go with what you want

I say, that's rather well-spoken, my good fellow! Might one suggest, for your consideration, the alternative: "am i bovvered though?"

Unfortunately I am far too middle class - I must lower my standards..

I'll try again "Am I bothered"
nope
I'll keep practicing.

Wasn't it the Heinekein advert where they did a mick take of "The rain in spain falls mainly on the plain" - maybe I will try again after a few pints.....

Although, I'm hardly one to talk: I still feel weird when I don't use proper grammar and punctuation even in text messages. My old English teacher would be proud...

I think it was Heineken... not sure though.

United-Kingdom Yes, you can customise too much...

It's a short step from customising to "tarting up". How many times have we smiled at cars (not necessarily MINIs although they are amongst the biggest offenders - especially "classic" Minis) because they are totally silly and "over the top".

Although it's natural to want to customise a car that you love (you don't see many tarted up LADAs!) in my opinion you need to show restraint from some of the aftermarket stuff now on offer, otherwise in the eyes of others your pride and joy is no longer cool but just silly. Think for example of the "zipper" roof decal!!

Unless of course you are an exhibitionist: remember Jimmy Savile in his daft huge American car, Diana Dors ditto, or that Beatle with his flower power Rolls-Royce (was it Lennon). Not to mention Lady Docker and her Daimlers...
