Selling a MINI...

Hi all,

I'm after some advice really.

I'm currently trying to sell my MINI and if i'm honest its not going well. I've had a couple of enquiries but nothing beyond emails.

The car is here: http://www.mini2.com/classifieds/sho...uct/3442/cat/2

Is the price ok? Is the ad wording ok?

Its been advertised on here, KAES, EssexMini2 and Pistonheads.

I may just have bad timing what with the current economic climate and rising fuel prices though.

Any advice would be great

TIA

Andy

What year is it?
I do agree that with petrol prices on the up, S's are getting harder to shift, especially not being as economical as newer ones.

Andy, I think the price and ad are fine. I think you may want to advertise to a wider audience. I would be very surprised if many Mini's actually sell via Mini2 or other Mini websites because most people on them already have Mini's?

I would consider Autotrader, that's where I sold my last car. It did sit there for a few months but went to the first viewer for the advertised price.

Also you may have problems in the currently climate selling an 'S' because I seriously think people are going to be definitely looking at MPG.

From feedback on here quite a lot of people sell via MINI2 and Pistonheads, especially with "nice" spec MINIs.

Looks OK to me too. May just be the market.

Market is bad at the moment, what with stupid fuel prices and the Tax going up next year-I finding it hard to shift my S too.

I put it on Ebay and all I got off there were jokers offering silly amounts, persistance is the key here I reckon.

It may be worth hanging on for a few months. One insider said on the radio yesterday that if crude prices keep increasing, the large saloon/MPV/SUV market is likely to implode, while small cars - even high performance ones, could even start to go up as demand soars.

You defo need to get the year on it tho, specially after mentioning 3 previous owners, I'd also go with what Vitesse said and stick it on autotrader or even eBay Motors.

May well be the '3 owners' - that'd put me off straight away.

Hi Andy,
Shame its going such a lovely car, we met at Thurrock b4 top gear and you obviosuly look after your car.Road tax and fuel costs are a major concern these days. I'd go with Autotrader too we use it at work and have a fair bit of sucess with it to be honest. The used car market if flat at the moment so perseverance is the key i feel. maybe even the local rags may help it go.

Mark

Advertise it in autotrader/piston heads like others have said i doubt it will sell elsewhere. Also agree withe others £300 or whataver its going tobe to tax a MINI is stupid along with the bad fuel cnsumption etc

Try and get a better photo. Most of the photo seems to be taken up with a gravel driveway and some houses - you can't really see the car at all. If the weather picks up, choose a nice sunny day and a location with a more neutral background and give the car the photo it deserves. The car should be the focus of the photo, not the things around it.

The market is very poor at present. I sold my daughters MX 5 through Autotrader last week. I priced it very realistically and only got two calls.

If you really want to make a sale I would reduce the price by £1000 and put it in Autotrader. This may not be what you want to hear but you really do have to tempt buyers in this market.

Firstly, I'd like to say that I wouldn't lower the price. It is my opinion that the car is 'cheap' anyway, and the condition which you say it is in and the fact that it will be detailed before collection should be enough to persuade people. That price is reasonable, and it would be an insult to yourself to lower it.

However, without causing offense, I feel you need to add things to the advert. What year is your car? 02/02, 02/52, 03/52, 03/03 etc. It's unknown. Also mention how many miles until the next service - if its a lot this will get people to think that its going to cost them less.

Also, what about pictures of the inside, rear, sides, under the bonnet, wheels, service history etc. I know that this will all be in very good condition and the service history filled correctly, however, to the casual buyer, although you say you are an enthusiast, they will think the worst. I do to be honest. The interior photo would eliminate fears that the leather is knackered etc. Say if you don't smoke. Also advertise on Auto Trader etc - wider audience.

I know that this is easy to overlook, but say what the chilli pack contains - again the casual buyer may not even have a clue what this means. Does it have TLC XL? I wouldn't bother mentioning the non-runflat tyres. Some people may find it off putting while others simply wouldn't care - people who buy minis know they bounce around!

Again I'm sorry if I have caused you offense, however, I feel that these additions and removals would make a difference to your advert. I hope that it goes well for you! Don't accept any silly offers, and if you do put it on Ebay, don't forget to put a reserve - it could go for £200!

Hey M.O.S. that's helpful advice. I've signed up on here as my girlfriend is struggling to sell her Cooper S and is keen to buy an MX-5 before summer is over. She's had it up for sale for 2 months, on ebay, Autotrader and Pistonheads but has had no interest. I'll be posting an ad for it in the classifieds when the forum let's me and will use some of your suggestions!

Glad they are useful for you. Shame you are getting rid of the Mini though! Still you could always get another. Here's a point - get her to get a convertible - combination of soft top and mini!
