United-Kingdom Lots of Questions about my Mini - Any experts?

Hi Guys,

Loving all the information on this site - great work.

I am new to Minis - just brought a 54 Mini One - in Black for £6500 with 54k on the clock.

Need your help though and information - I have alot of questions below - thanks in advance for answers! Im useless so I apologise for all the questions!

Did I get a good price for it - I have only looked on Autotrader and all the others for that price are 2002 or older? I part exchanged my orange Peugeot 106 W reg with 62k on the clock - body work could be better....and got £750 for it which I thought was ok...but was it?

I dont think it has the TLC package with it although its under warranty for 3 months and it will be serviced for me this week - how much is a service without the TLC package?

The mini I brought has a CD changer in the boot but as im not collecting it till next week (although I have paid already - cos they are servicing it for me etc) I dont know what was in the front - I mean its not a single cd slot in the front I know that but I cant remember if it was a Mini Disc or a Cassette player - which would it be if I have a cd changer in the boot?

Is black a good colour for a car - I always have liked black cars but noticed they get dirty quick - but easier to sell on? is that right?

Im really excited about buying this Mini - its not low mileage its not high either - its got 54k on the clock - considering in the 4 years I had my peugeot I only did 21k in it - its not gonna get much mileage on it - however when is a good time mileage wise to sell it on? - I was thinking 69k? because then its not at 70 and still has alot of life in it. (saying this I saw a 53 reg mini with 122000 miles on the clock!!! for £5500 - so even with that much minis are still selling for a good price)

Im 90% sure my mini hasnt got air con - I dont mind but if I did want it fitted - would this be hard? and how much would it cost at a mini dealers?

Thanks for reading I look forward to replies!

Welcome, but I know less about Ones than you do so I can't offer any help. (I hope you're good at washing because the black bits on mine show the dirt even more than the BRG ones.)

Wow !! ... You haven`t even picked it up yet, & already you`re looking into selling it

There was a model update in July 2004, so yours being a 54 plate should be the newer model
The106 PX also seems about right.
Take it your getting it from a non-MINI dealer if it doesnt come with the warranty, but no problem as servicing pretty much the same as any modern car @ around £120 for all the usual stuff depending where you live.

You`re right that Black cars do look the worse when dirty ... but great when polished

Dont know abouut the Cd, but milage is average for year {although my 54 plate has only just passed 20k} ... as for selling it

Dont worry about the air con, mine hardly gets used - I only put it on around once a month to keep the circulation ok, as for retro fitting ... around £1500 should cover it

Welcome to MINI2

Hi and welcome! Sorry I can't help with questions about UK spec, but I think our cars look lovely in black.

Hi
I have 54 plate cooper which is the facelift model and i have 38k on it (just want to drive it everywhere!). I have the cd changer in the boot and its a tapedeck up front if its the original mini stereo. Its an awesome sounding stereo by the way! Really good quality. Good thing aboutthe changer is you can swap it for the ipod connector if you want to (about £150 i think).
If you check in your little pouch where the manual is etc. if you have the TLC pack there will be a voucher book in there.
As for keeping i clean....the back of the mini is a nightmare! it reminds me of a dog rolling around in mud. the front of the mini could be clean and bright and the back will be brown! Mine gets a wash twice a week to keep him looking great!

That sounds a good price to me, i have a 53 plate MINI ONE and it has 38thousand miles on it so i would say the milage is mid to high. I wouldent bother getting aircon fitted as its just too much money and you wont get it back. Enjoy your new MINI

I part exchanged my orange Peugeot 106 W reg with 62k on the clock - body work could be better....and got £750 for it which I thought was ok...but was it? Can't comment here because at the end of the day spec levels vary wildly from car to car and dealers, especially independant ones have no idea how to price a MINI. They usually go on the high side. On the face of it the price seems good. As for the peugeot, just be pleased you;re rid of it

I dont think it has the TLC package with it although its under warranty for 3 months and it will be serviced for me this week - how much is a service without the TLC package? Unfortunately any TLC the car had will have expired at 50k, if not sooner. At 4k you are too late to upgrade to the TLC XL, although it may be worth checking with your local dealer that the previous owner didn't do this for you. A main dealer will charge you about £120 for an oil service and possibly as much as £300 for an inspection 1 or 2. If warranty worries you then you could always get an after market one for about £240.

Can't answer this one for certain but I expect a cassette player.

Is black a good colour for a car - I always have liked black cars but noticed they get dirty quick - but easier to sell on? is that right? Black shows dirt, but looks great clean. The back end of your MINI will be permanently filthy thanks to the aerodynamics. Wouldn't worry about it though. And keep her away from car washes and jet washes. Could be worse, mines white

(saying this I saw a 53 reg mini with 122000 miles on the clock!!! for £5500 - so even with that much minis are still selling for a good price) Why worry about selling it just yet? But try and keep it to 10k a year, then you'll be ok. Don't do what I've done and put 35k per annum on her

Im 90% sure my mini hasnt got air con - I dont mind but if I did want it fitted - would this be hard? and how much would it cost at a mini dealers? As the other have posted getting this retro fitted will be ridiculously expensive. Wouldn't worry about it anyway. I don't use mine because in the ONE/Cooper it just saps power from the engine like you wouldn't believe.

Thanks for reading I look forward to replies!

There we are, bet you wished you'd never asked. Good luck, enjoy!!! And welcome to M2.

We've just bought a 54 plate Cooper and love it.

Depends on your preferences, but I wouldn't have a car now without Air Con - certainly not for a long journey. Having siad that, around town, I'm not that bothered as our car also has has the panoramic sunroof - so we open the roof and the windows around town anyway.

Retro-fitting an option like Air con, is almost always a false economy. It costs a fortune and it's all money you'll never get back. You'd almost be better off, selling your car and buying one with air con for the money it will cost you.

I love black/dark cars. But while I used to spend every weekend cleaning and waxing our old cars, since my daughter was born, I don't have time anymore. So having a dark car isn't great for me anymore. They're great if you can commit to cleaning it regularly. Just watch out for swirls as they really show up on dark colours.

Just for a comparison, we paid £8,500 for our Cooper about three months ago - this has full leather, aircon and dual sunroofs though - and was pretty much the cheapest one we saw at the time.

Swirls appear because of bad washing technique:

Check out this thread:

When we picked up our car, it looked OK in the dull light, but get some sun on it, and you could really see them.

Here's a good introduction to washing your car the safe way - with two buckets and a sheepskin mit (definitely not a sponge)
