There have been quite a few "husband & wife" prosecutions, where husband persuades wife to say she was driving (as hubby was already on 9 points, say). It's a bit tragic when two people go to prison, especially as the worst that would have happened is a 6m ban for the husband before they started telling lies.
It's pretty clear we are not going to agree on this subject and its way off topic now but just to straighten up, I agree entirely with the other reply saying I have the utmost sympathy for your friend. It is the bad apples in any profession that gives the rest a bad name but is it entriely fair of you to brand everyone equally? And as for the comment about the Met, again, that's treating all police officers the same. It's in the past, thing's have changed (substantially, certainly in the 2 forces I've been in, neither of which are the Met I might add.) I certainly don't generalise when I deal with people and I genuinely don't know officers who do and the service won't tolerate it anymore and rightly so.
I appreciate the fact that as a taxpayer you have the right to an opinion about any public service but your initial post was very sweeping, basing your opinion of all police, presumably, on your somewhat coloured view of police which I don't think added anything to answering the chaps question, nor was it fair to any of the many decent, hard working, honest police officers of this country or based on anything factual.
Lets leave it there cos any further comment I make will become petty and quite honestly, life's too short and I'd rather go to bed.
I do think people are using this thread as a cheap shot for having a go at the serving policemen on the forum and should maybe have a reality check. Without their hard work then the country would be in total chaos.
There is only one person in a position to make an honest judgement on whether he deservered a section 59 or not and no one else can make that call. But the policeman at the time felt it was justified so I cannot, pass judgement because I didn't witness it.
Just remember next time your house is broken into or god help a relative or a friend is hurt in anyway, be it a mugging or road accident who has to pick up the pieces.
I'm not a policeman or have any direct links to them but I respect what a tough job they have to do.

If you are going to criticise the grammar and spelling in other posts (richhamer) or accuse Police Officers of being thick you should make sure your contributions are error free.........fool. I would take great pleasure in seizing your car. (Police Officer with honours degree in physics)
I'd recommend actually browsing Pepipoo before making a blanket statement like that. It's got me out of a few spots of bother with the law, and all for FREE
That's great... lovely to see a completely non-judgmental stance on upholding the law....
You must be related to the coppers who insist on stop and searching me every time I get on the tube. If anyone wants to see what a Section 44 looks like I got a huge wad of them.
As the guy who is an actual policeman said earlier...i doubt he even bothered putting it into the police computer so wouldnt worry about it too much.
I got stopped before by a bored poilceman who said....you went round that roundabout and the following roads a bit fast. You didnt break the speed limit but i thought you were going quite fast!? He gave me a producer....i went to the station but couldnt find the paper bit to my licence, my mot at the time had expired by 2days and i brought last years insurance form with me. They said i was under arrest for not having any documents, let me go then i never heard anything further. haha
Obviously this must of been just before that plods lunch break of something....not suggesting everyone will get away with it....
