| The choice is simple dependent on what you want. The R53 MCS had a cuter face, sublime handling, and the engine had plenty of character. However poor fuel economy and high CO2 emissions make it more expensive to run. Buy if you like driving but don't do too many miles. It will definitely put a big grin on your face. It is a car for enthusiasts. The R56 MCS is a much more refined car, with a great ride and a sophisticated engine. This means plenty of torque, great fuel economy, and low CO2 emissions making it fast and cheap to run, but perhaps lacking slightly in character. Buy if you like driving but do lots of miles. It will still put on a big grin on your face. It is like a MINI grand tourer! |

| I had my mate in my 06 MCS the other week and we were going down the twisty roads in Surrey - he was amazed by the supercharger whine, and it actually made him smile and laugh with pure enjoyment! He was actually gripping onto the seat as he said I was going far too fast... I was doing 40!!!! He said it felt much quicker and like a real go-kart. I've had my S for over a year now, and it still makes me very happy, and scares my girlfriend! The R53 is simply a superb car that will never cease to impress people. The R56 is a technologically brilliant car - in a green, comfort obsessed world it's an A*. Would I have one? Probably when mine is knackered beyond recognition, or I get a frail back |

| the super charger is what makes the mini cooper s so distinct, u hear it coming! the 1st gen looks much nicer and sits lower where as the new ones looked jacked up oh and the thing i like about the 2nd gen is the grill. i think they tried too hard with the 2nd gen. cooper s is the best hatch i have ever driven, it is such a beautiful car. |

| Adam & Sam I am in total agreement with you. It is actually a Chrysler engine, and yes built in Brazil. That in no way- makes the R53 a bad engine! It is actually bullet proof! And tested to destruction by the company Recardo- based in Sussex England. I have a friend who works at Ricardo`s and they test many engines from the likes of; Aston Martin to the Mclaren F1. And he highly rates the "Chrysler" Tritec engine! The R53 Supercharged S is the MINI that gave BMW a "Master Class" Car! That had every intention of bringing the "morris mini" back to life. The Supercharger "whine" that so many love, has the resemblence of the original mini`s gear box noise. The Head Lights/Rear Lights/ the overal shape is what we all love. There are so many plus points with the R53 compared to the rather padestrianised R56. The R53 as "mentioned" is a pure drivers car, everything about it is ..drive me,enjoy me.. Does a guy driving a 89 Porsche 911 worry about the petrol price? No he just enjoys the car for what it is. Does the girl who owns a tax exempt VW Camper care about having to pay "NO" Tax? offcourse not, she loves guys drooling at her at the traffic lights for her "retro coolness" though ![]() The moral of the story is; The R56 has grown up, quiet, good on fuel, padestrian safety-with a bulbous front & rear (not to all tastes) The engine emits less CO2 (cheaper tax) What else can I say.. The R53 sheer driving pleasure, the "rawness" of everything, but still a comfortable car! A sexy "whining" Supercharger, which believe me, even impresses high flyers in their Ferarris, Lotuses...even that gorgeous milf in a 500SL AMG Merc, she kept pulling up next to me and asking why my car sounds better than hers? " " I replied; this is a real MINI and it cost me a quarter of the SL, I got a flirt from a high flying proffesional sexy woman in a £70K car The R53 can be bought now; for silly money, and enjoyed for many years. I canot sell mine- an 02 owned three and 1/2 years now! I canot see for the life of me, anything that is as good looking or as entertaining to drive. If you pick up a cheap R53..who cares about depreciation? You dont have to worry then. Just enjoy it! I actually want to go for a drive now !I would love to see the new shape MINI`S going more retro again (R53) INMHO. And looking forward to BMW putting their own engine in the MINI. Lates News- in the form of a 3-cylinder 1.3 capable of the standard 170BHP and some more, and apparently it is super smooth and super efficient+speed. and more talk of adding twin-charge set up (Jcw eat your heart out)..wow! come on BMW!
