Advanced Driving Test

Being a new MCS owner, I've been having a brilliant time around the country lanes. My grandmother heard of these antics and, as an advanced driver for decades said that she would pay for me to do the whole course. I have already done a bit of it for a summer job and am really looking forward to it, what can be better than an ex-police driver telling you to go fast?!

Has anyone else done it who can let me know how you found it? I'm pretty sure being an advanced driver doesn't help you much with insurance, but does anyone know how much company's tend to discount for being an AM?

From what im aware of the advanced driving test can reduce insurance in some cases, obviously it all depends on the insurance company.

I havent looked into it properly, but im almost certain i read somewhere it can reduce insurance.

Hi,
Please post up some info on where you are going and the costs involved..

I've been promising myself to do this for a while now, not concerned re insurance just want to be a better driver - spotless history so far but there is always so much more to learn.

Cheers, Geoff..

Our drivers at work are having to do this. I thought about doing it as well, but not decided yet

You may or may not find they teach you how to drive fast - it's quite likely to be a course on advanced defensive driving, reading the road and conditions and so on. I'd be surprised if the course was allowed to recommend police pursuit type driving!

If you want to learn to drive fast, I would have thought that you would go to a track and get taught by a racing instructor Cause thats what I am doing

Vehicle position is one of the key areas they work on. I found the commentary whilst driving bizarre but it does help!

As for insurance ranges from 5 - 10% discount.

I've done mine...it's not necessarily ex police driver/instructors that teach you... it's volunteers.

worthwhile doing, it's a one off payment of around £90 i think at the moment (Was £80 when i did mine in 04)

You're mostly taught defensive driving, smooth driving, manoeuvering skills, reading the road and anticipating things. that sort of thing. i thought it was great, made me a much better driver and certainly has helped me avoid more than a few accidents. Did bugger all for my insurance really, but i'm in northern ireland where the limiting factor on insurance is the fact that the whole country puts a personal injury claim in for a minor bump. no accidents myself yet (touch wood) in 11 years of driving and i think that's largely down to the IAM training

I did it when I was 20 through work along with some other training and it will make you a much better driver on the road, much more so than just doing some track instruction.
But in all honesty in 20 years of driving it's never really saved me any money on insurance

As I suspected, no real big change on the insurance. I'm not starting the instruction/test for a while yet but when I do I will post up what its like and how much more I like my MCS when I'm a more confident and better driver. I have done part of the test with an ex-police officer who helped write the AM test and with him (although it wasn't anything to do with the actual test) he encouraged me to overtake at speed (safely-ish) and put my foot down through corners I had never been too before! The 3 things he did teach me 4 years ago I still use and made me more confident so I have high hopes!

I completed mine 18 years ago, I'm old

I felt it was well worth doing.

My test was arranged via my driving instructor and made me a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists
