Totally with you both on that, the roads I drive to work have been pure ice some mornings this week, great fun in a GP

Take your time, be aware of the temp, where the ice is, and where ice could be that you can't see and drive accordingly, then its only frustrating that you can't go faster and never dangerous to you, other roads users or your precious MINI

But other than that, when you do get a good unfrozen road this weather is just the best ever, cold air and superchargers

got a great tank-slapper on coming round our crescent last night 90 degree bend, no parked cars & just tapped it before straightening up - in a totally controlled & safe manner obviously - hope none of the neighbours were looking out their windows

Italians are worse drivers fullstop!

my cousin moved out there at 18 to play rugby over there and...its scary! dont stop at zebra crossings to let you cross the road...indicators dont exist, and just general driving experience.....scary!

oh and whenever we parked out rent-a-car in a car park...we would come back to a new scratch/dent! ha

Exclamation winter tyres

I wouldn't want to be driving my MCS on ice or snow with summer tyres - perhaps it's worth a second set of 15's or 16's (or steelies off ebay?) and some winter tyres for all those days and nights the temperatures drop below 6C (that is, when summer tyres are too hard to be of ant real use). Bear in mind that these are mandatory in many parts of Europe, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland etc.

Instead of tiptoeing around all winter, waiting to spin off or get hit by some other joker, you can still go for a drive! My point is, you're probably wearing boots this time of year, so why not consider the right tyres for the conditions?

Yer I agree conditions are really really bad in the country, all cleared up now though.

Put it this way on my drive yesterday I (delibaretly) did a full 180 handbrake turn doing 5mph was great fun tho

OW yer and I got stuck once on a hill in the snow, revised back and took it with more speed = scary at times but got up. (this was on a very very quiet country lane).

Here the MINI delaer arranged a skid pan day for the launch of the JCW - it was excellent, and a real eye-opener to how important it is to have good tyres, and to drive as the local conditions demand.....all the electronic gubbins on the car might help, but they can't defeat the laws of physics!

And the skid-pan day is also mandatory for all new drivers within 18 months of passing their tests.....

Drive carefully and safely all, and hope that everyone else is just as responsible!

Ian

Well, something to fill the quiet hours with during Mini United 2009?

We brits love our weather and its variances and then all seem surprised by it!!!

Skid pan stuff, really valuable, but more valuable coaching with Institute of Advanced Motorists, reason being, when your in a skid its too late to avoid it, avoiding a skid comes from better awareness of driving.

Now many think of Advanced driving as defensive driving and thus it slows them down, if its done in line with the goals, it actually helps you go quicker, when its safe to do so, but cuts down on the risks.

That said, skid pans or skid trolleys, are very valuable as none of us is perfect and even with good driving something could go wrong, and this training will help you get out of it safely.

In this kind of weather, good appreciation of the road surfaces, awareness of "microclimates", and attention to what is happening around, should help make the driving safe. And I am in favour of finding empty parking facilities or industrial sites with ice and snow and having a bit of a razz eound, so your not a nuisance or danger, but can find out how the car handles and have a bit of fun, J turns are great on ice!!!!

I pulled onto the motorway. went to straighten up and it spun, it felt like i just pulled onto 1 big sheet of ice, the pics are around 2-3 hours later, and the accident happend about 30 mins before the gritting truck went past

The car is RWD with a LSD and is very twitchy in the wet/snow/ice

The car only had very minor damage alto it would not look like it, the rear wing was panel beated back and repainted the front had a new wing, oh and and new front back light and bumper off ebay. was very lucky.

The S2000 is made of tin foil and is very light so it does not hold up well

Those wide low-profile tyres can't have helped

Glad you and the car are both OK

Not here much any more
