Blinking outside temp. reading

The last couple of mornings, I've had my MINI sound a chime and the outside temp reading on the rev counter blinks at me. This has never happened before, but has now happened the last two mornings when the temperature has been in the low to mid 30's (F). I've looked in the manual and either this is not mentioned, or I missed it.
Anyone know the cause of this? TIA

Well Guys,
how much C° is 37F?? let me guess ......3°C??
Because, in mine other BMW product, 525i t, when the temp is below 3°Celsius, the comp give a warning signal and the temp is blinking, so you have a warning for ice on the road, even if you are driving, he will give you this warning, I am not sure my MCS will do this, and I can not trying yet because the temp here is +/- 10 °c, and heu...the MCS is to big to put in te fridgirator
for trying

I'll add my "me too" to this thread. Happened last night (36° F). And I just thought my electrics were starting to flake out...

As MJJ said its summat BMW products do. Have to say the first time it happened to me (not in the cooper) i was going rather quickly down a country road and the dash board started flashing and beeping. I was like "OOO F**K" as thought summat was wrong! Now I'm used to it.

mine has yet to chime, but then it's only read 7.5C so far. i'm wondering what happens if you have the obc and you're in range mode (or any of the other three). will you just hear the chime (could be alarming if you don't see the temp blinking) or does it go to temp mode? or doesn't it chime at all unless you're checking the temperature perhaps, nah that'd be stupid.

It definitely defaults to the temperature mode and flashes the warning no matter what mode your trip computer is in at the time, I don't think it chimes though, except at start up, I think.....its been almost a year since the temp has been that low here thankfully, though its heading that way now.....rapidly !

It switches automatically to the temp mode while it chimes, and then switches back after flashing several times.

It chimes when it goes below 3 degrees C. And if it goes over 4 and then goes under 3 again it chimes again. (that way if it keeps flicking between 3 and 3.5 it doesn't keep annoying you) Thats what the BMW 3 series one did anyway. It also changed to temp displa regardless of what you were on and stayed on it.

Not on my Cooper

Doesn't happen on my cooper!

Had 2 degrees C the other morning. No flash, no chime ..... in fact it never happened right through last winter when the temp sometimes got down as far as -15.

Anybody know if it has to be activated or is only on certain models?

Mines never been that low so maybe it was only the early cars or maybe its only the late cars. Then again it may only be the cars with OBC

Thanks to everyone for the heads up on this feature.

I observed the temperature alert twice last evening: when the digital thermometer reading fell to 37 °F, there was one chime followed by nine blinks of the display.

My Cooper does not have the on-board computer.

I'm no longer a temperature reading virgin

Chimed last night a 3 degrees. Not the same scary expereince of the BMW, just chimed once (same as lights left on when car door opens) and flashed.
