Which alarm and immobiliser?

Hi everyone,

I want to get an alarm fitted to my car and would like some recommendations as I’m not sure.

I went to the Santa Pod fast show and was talking to someone from Falcon Security which seem quite good.

The one I was shown had a remote control with it and warned you if someone was near the car and went crazy if someone was inside it. It worked up to 1 mile away as well and was about £80. I think you could also turn the car on by the remote and it warned the person to get away. Fitting cost £80 to £100. I know I’ve seen some mini’s with alarms which flash so it is visible it is there, any ideas?

And am I right in thinking the cooper has a Thathcam category 2 immobilise already fitted? or do I need to get one as well?

I can’t spend more than £200 really.

Thank you,

Vicki

I thought all MINIs have alarms & immobilisers as standard?

If you do buy an alarm that works up to 1 mile away (I've never seen that before... would be very surprised) then make sure it's a rolling-code type.

I just don't know enough about it, I will look into it more, you've made me think now!!

What I meant with working one mile away was the remote control.

The guy said if someone is near your car as long as your no more than one mile away the remote will go off and let you know!

Thank you for your quick reply!!

Vicki :-)

Clifford and Viper do systems that will let you know if the alarm has been triggered and what sensor, Will also let you start the car by mobile phone

No worries, you only get Cat 1 when its an alarm and immobiliser the alarm brain is a lot harder to get into. I know how you feel I had my Mini broke into three times before I got the new alarm

Audible alarms are okay, but very easy to overcome for the professional car thief. It's only really good for smash and grab type thefts - i.e. radio theft etc.

I'd get the hook and cane system from mikey (NewMINIStuff.com)

If the car is stolen without it being present it stops the vehicle preventing theft

I discovered tonight that my MINI has alarm fitted. It went off!!! Went out to check the car, but all fine. It's a nasty high pitched noise and the indicator lights were blinking, but not the head lights.

Bit embarrassing, as I heard that same noise before in my street and always assumed it was another car...

I don't think you need to worry too much Vicki
The types that pinch dust caps can only just manage to spell their names and have just mastered walking. I have watched 6 year olds creeping up our drive to pinch the shiny dust caps for their bikes! Guess a few years on they will be nicking the whole bloody car..... On second thoughts perhaps a gas powered flame incineration system would be a useful addition.
Must check if my Mini Cooper has an alarm. I thought it did!. The key thing is the key thing as they say. Don't leave your keys on display or in reach of your letterbox.

Just thinking about these warning remotes a bit more. Yes they do inform you of someone messing with your car and even some of them have a GPRS module and they text your mobile with a message. BUT what are you going to do about it? Apart from phoning the boys in blue, you daren't (shouldn't) approach or collar the numfunks as you certainly risk your health nowadays. Big steering lock, flashing alarm LED and a decent insurance is my recommendation. The warning remotes will become another stress to worry about.
