Offline | I'm just miserable. I picked up my Mini Cooper on Oct 21st. (Pepper White, Black Bonnet Stripes & Red cloth interior). Today (November 1st) I was T-boned by an ancient lady driving a '71 Chevy. (It was as wide as the Mini was long.) She plowed through a stop sign. Neither of us was hurt - although my friend said I should have strangled her by her panty hose. The collision pushed my Mini into the air and spun it 180 degrees. It landed upright but broke the axle. Passenger side was crunched. It was ugly. I took pictures and will post them later. But my point to this posting, my airbags did not deploy. At all! I was very surprised. Anybody else have the same thing happen? Lori 2003 Pepper White Cooper Picked up on Oct 21, 2002 - T-Boned by an 89 yr old woman on Nov 1st, 2002. Offline | Sorry to hear about your crash. These old folks should not be be driving. As to the airbag. Could it be it didn't deploy because there was no one sitting in the passenger seat? Red/Black R56 Cooper |

Offline | Thanks for all the responses. Nice to know other Mini-lovers care about ya! The only camera I could get my hands on was the old fashioned kind with film. (LOL) So it will take a day to two to get the pics back. I will post them soon. I just re-read the accident report. The lady who hit me is 89 years old. I know it must be a hard thing to give up your driving privleges, but at some point, you have to for the other person's sake. Offline | What a nightmare! Most importantly, it sounds like you sustained no (physical) damage. I have grown very confident in the Cooper's stability, handling and control being able to allow me to avoid trouble on the road, although I occasionally think about an uncontrollable scenario like yours, where some dimbulb appears out of nowhere. Best wishes for a timely recovery. catalyst 2002 Pepper White Cooper 5 speed, Black roof w/ spoiler, sunroof, Black kaleido cloth sport seats, silver 7-hole wheels, DSC, front fogs, chrome lines, MFSW, built 8/7, acquired 9/12 |

Offline | I too am very glad to hear YOU are OK. I'm sure its hard to remember that these are in fact things, we LOVE 'em but still things none the less, it will be replaced, you cant be. I hope that the aches and pains subside soon, even that tender spot for your MINI. I know that my grandmother stoped driving after she pulled out in front of someone. I felt bad for everyone in that case, and you in this case, are the unfortunate victim. It's comforting to know that your "David" MINI protected you well against that Chevy "Goliath" Take care... Offline | killian, Very happy you are OK. One thing I have found on these forums is that there are a lot of good, caring people out there who are MINI owners. We are hearing a lot about airbags not deploying. I know that there are a lot of variables that determine if and when they do deploy, but the number of incidents causing questions is troubling. On the other hand, in a large versus small vehicle side impact collision, you still walked away. That is a good thing and a testament to the overall safety of the MINI. With a car as new as yours, you should make sure they flat out replace the car with a new MINI, and they need to provide you with a car while you wait for delivery. |

Offline | I have yet to hear of a single case where an airbag did not deploy and the driver/passenger were subsequently injured more then they would have if the airbag did deploy. Folks are walking away unharmed so it's a testament to the programming of when to deploy an airbag. Those things are not cheap and can cause minor injuries of their own (typically limited to minor burns from the bag 'firing'). They are specifically designed not to go off unless absolutely needed. |

Offline | Yes, airbags can in and of themselves cause injuries, mostly abrasions and burns, so they are being designed better to actuate only when needed. There is another thread though about a guy in the Phillipines who's airbag did not deploy and the driver subsequently died of injuries sustained in the crash. Here again however, even though it was NOT a roll-over, from the description I could see that it could look like one to the sensors, therefore no deployment. It will take a forensic reconstruction of the accident to know for sure. Still other threads bring up harness faults that cause the airbag warning light to illuminate. If the warning light is on, the airbag system sees a fault and the airbags will not deploy. I hope that this problem has now been fixed, but I plan to watch for it in my MINI. |

Offline | There are exceptions to every rule ... that is why I've always said there should be mandatory driving tests everytime you renew your license, that way the bad drivers (due to age, lack of skill or laziness) would either have to attend driving school or do without a license if they couldnt prove they could drive safely |

Offline | This is the crash I mentioned on my post yesterday. I'm still so miserable over the whole thing. She was only 10 days old. :-( And - I found out last night that the old lady had let her auto insurance expire - so she has none! ARRGH! At any rate, I'm meeting with the adjuster on Monday. I'd appreciate any advice you guys can give me. Do you think that if repaired, it would be the same as before? Should I ask only for "factory" parts vs after market? Any hope I could get it totaled and be able to order a new one? How badly do you think the back wheel is damaged? 2003 Pepper White Cooper Picked up on Oct 21, 2002 - T-Boned by an 89 yr old woman on Nov 1st, 2002. Was I destined not to have a Mini? |
